Diane Rehm said a majority support Bush. More "Popular President" Lies
Edited on Tue Apr-06-04 11:18 AM by Woodstock
I expected this from the lying corporate media, but thought Diane Rehm was at least balanced. The "popular president" line from her? Very disappointing. And it's lies, because the facts just don't support it, and haven't for some time.

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040405/ap_on_el_pr/iraq_poll_1

Public approval of President Bush's handling of Iraq has slipped to a new low — alongside his overall job rating — after last week's grisly deaths of four contractors in Fallujah, a poll says...

Four in 10, or 40 percent, approve of the way Bush is handling Iraq, while 53 percent disapprove. That's down from six in 10 who approved in mid-January, according to the poll by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press.

Bush's overall job approval is at 43 percent, a low point for his presidency, down from 56 percent in mid-January. In the new poll, 47 percent disapproved of Bush's job performance...

2. Are you being facetious, or you really want to know?

Not sure how to respond. I thought most had heard of this show. She's the host of a respected talk show on NPR, The Diane Rehm Show. http://www.wamu.org . She normally tries to be impartial, and often asks important questions of Bush propagandists. I have a few gripes, a big on that William Kristol is a frequent guest, and he is often paired with a weak so-called liberal. He's the neocon of neocons, as extreme as you get, and needs to be paired with someone strong to offer the other side of the story. She also only rarely identifies him as PNAC, and only when a guest brings it up, which she should do always. PNAC essentially sets US policy, so his involvement is not a small thing to be shrugged aside. But overall, I've liked her show, as she has had some important guests that normally do not get this sort of opportunity to be heard, but perpetuating the "popular president" myth is disappointing.

4. She's actually a beautiful older woman

And not deserving of that statement. She works hard to control her voice impairment.

Also, she makes the occasional slip on the show, but I would not call her conservative at all. She has on some important liberal guests.

5. Hey she has a problem with her voice, that is unfair.
Change the station if you don't want to listen to her. I think she does a pretty good job of giving the rightwing hacks enough rope to hang themselves.

9. You're welcome!
It's really a good show usually, if you can stand hearing Bush's propagandists lie half the time. The callers are very good at challenging the lies, though. Diane usually tries to call them on their lies, too. This "popular president" thing has bugged me for a while, I was disappointed that she perpetuated it.

6. She used to be very good back before she went national
I used to listen to her on WAMU back when she was just a DC show and really liked her (though I liked Derrick McGinty's show better).

It seemed when she went national and started having lots of the inside-the-beltway "cocktail crowd" on her show, I noticed she started being a bit too deferential to them for my taste.

This post only indicates to me that she hasn't changed, unfortunately.

11. Programming has changed
Those of us listening to NPR or the WMU in the Washington, DC are are aware that NPR lost its public funding and it is now heavily relying on corporate "donations" and individual pledges. It is clear that its programming has become more lenient toward the Bush administration's and less liberal. I am not surprise that Diane Rehm seems to be following a more conservative line now that their donors have changed.
