My sister had a job interview with a fundie law firm
She is hardcore liberal and will be attending law school with the goal of working for the ACLU. She was laid off about three months ago from a paralegal job and just had her second interview with a law firm that is openly fundamentalist (they prayed for her before her interview).

Since she has been out of work for 3 months and will be attending law school in the Fall anyway, I am encouraging her to take this job to get an insider's view. She's a terrific writer too, so I bet she'd have some GREAT stories to tell afterwards.

What would your advice be?

2. Actually, no, she's 36.
This is a career change for her. She has been accepted by several law schools, but she still needs to work between now and then to pay the bills.

Oh, and I get to meet my first Log Cabin Republican tomorrow (I'm a software trainer at a law firm and train new hires--the guy actually had this on his resume.)

Definitely! The thing about religious fundie groups is that when they're setting forth a somewhat extreme agenda, they'll quietly prognosticate about God and bow their heads and solemnly agree that this tragic course of action must be taken.... and then they'll very quietly all go do their jobs without comment because theirs is the way of the Lord. They need not discuss their plans, for the Bible makes irrelevant all discussion.

This makes it very hard to figure out from the outside what exactly the extreme agenda is. There will be hints as their plans come to fruition, but by the time it falls from the tree, the soil on which it lands is already poisoned and corrupted. These are, in a very real sense, the Talibornagain.

An inside look is very important if we are to combat an incipient theocracy. Tell her to go for it.

edited to add: fundie lawyers? That's a very scary thought.

4. Hope she gets the job!!!
Wouldn't recommend anyone turn down a paycheck. + she is clearly bright and may just change some minds. :) She can always use the experience to her advantage later, just like going from the DA's office to a Defense Attorney. Good luck to her.

I'll send along my atheist prayer for her...God-Darnit, good luck!!

5. Take their money!
Take their money! Take the job. It's only for a limited period anyway.

Tell her to bite her tongue and learn how her future opponents in the courtroom think and work.

A little research project for her, so to speak. It will be invaluable to know the mindset of these folks one day when she's practicing law herself.

6. My first response was to run away and don't look back.
On the other hand, she could take their money, but she must be model fundi employee for the time, even if it means wearing a burka.

If it's for research purposes as well as the rent, she still has to play by their rules. Most important: They must part amiably. Do not leave in a huff or in any way that will come back to haunt her.

And if she’s up to it, more power to her.

8. I think Jesus would tell her to go for it!
He was a revolutionary and understood quite well the need to penetrate the councils of the tyrant, learn their methods and intentions, scout out their weaknesses, and identify those who could potentially be liberated. Besides which, imagine the fun she could have on the way out when she leaves that job ...

Just as long as the bastards don't grind her down ...

(Full disclosure: I believe in a "power greater than myself". It fits with my experience. I respect aetheists in their beliefs so long as they will respect mine. Most aetheists of my acquaintance are far more honorable in their conduct than the right wing assclowns that are making "Christianity" a bad word. Party on.)
