Cheney fundraising in "Big Sky Country"
From the Billings (MT) Gazette:

http://www.billingsgazette.com/index.php?tts=1&display=rednews/2003/08/07/build/local/20-cheney.inc

"Vice President Dick Cheney emphasized national security as the driving force of the George W. Bush administration since 9/11 during his fund-raising stop in Billings Wednesday evening.

Cheney is puddle-jumping through the West this week raising money for the Bush-Cheney '04 re-election effort next year.

Donors at this stop put about $175,000 in the war chest, said Marc Racicot, Montana's former governor and chairman of the re-election committee."

etc. etc. - talks about upcoming stops on the (slime) trail

I don't know if the ad will rotate out, but looking at it this morning there is a patriotic ad graphic for Advanced Laser Center. The background is the American Flag and the Declaration of Independence. And the tag line is... "Freedom from unwanted hair!" Very classy... NOT

7. Not For Montana
or any of these small town fundraisers (Dean would blow them away too easily).

I would like to see Dean do a pass through in Montana/Wyoming and the Dakotas though because I think his message would be really well received there.

2. hair removal? -- it's big among GOP in Montana

As for the laser center ad: Remember that the Republican nominee for Senate last year in Montana was a hairdresser. Indeed, that was his undoing, after he suggested that a Democratic ad that said he used federal loan guarantees for his barbering school was actually telegraphing voters that he was gay, which he wasn't.

3. Running on 'national security', huh?
That's not very surprising, considering its the only thing the Repubs can run on--even though in reality, they're pretty miserable when it comes to protecting the country (who did 9/11 happen under? It wasnt Clinton...who is creating more terrorists? Not Clinton!).

They've been disastrous on everything else and even they know it. They'll stick to the myth of Republicans being tough on defence/security, until the people of America finally wake up.

4. whew
well, at least we know that terrorists won't target Montana.

:eyes:

Why does this country care so much about fighting terrorism in all 50 states. It's only about five or six states that are legit targets...

New York
California
Illinios
Michigan
Florida

That's it! Who's gonna attack Wyoming or Utah? What is there to attack...NOTHING!

5. montanans and terrorism
It's ironic because Montana and neighboring states have already achieved notoriety for *domestic* terrorism (unabomber anyone?)

Yet the equation of terrorism with "foreigners" is as American as apple pie. This reminds me of a Great Falls story a few months back:

Two Marine recruits weren't terrorists, just on training hike

8. That Doesn't Make Them A Target, Does It?
If anything, it makes it an easy path to get to the real targets, i would surmise. Even if a terrorist army came across the border, the people in Montana would have little to fear. The gang would likely be headed somewhere much more populated and economically critical.

That's why i don't get this. Why would folks in these rooftop states (Washington, excluded) be concerned about National security issues. They're probably already the safest people in the country.
