Despite the economy, Californians still moving to the Northwest!
Edited on Thu Aug-07-03 03:20 AM by Cascadian
Californians.....why are you still moving up here??? Why are taking over my region???? Read on!

http://archives.seattletimes.nwsource.com/cgi-bin/texis.cgi/web/vortex/display?slug=migration06m&date=20030806&query=Californians

Now I don't hate Californians, but being a staunch Cascadian (Northwesterner), I feel you guys are still trying to colonize are lands, take over, and change everything here! Make Seattle into another L.A.! Why can't you move to Arizona or something? This is why I am part of a political party that wants to save the Northwest from Californianization! Please go someplace else!

2. sympathize
I sympathize! I don't live anywhere close to Cascadia, but in the green pretty place where I now live east of the Rockies, I don't want the Californians coming in, jacking up property prices, and paving over our green hills.

I did my part when I left California. I went to....Alabama! LOL!!!

4. Emmett Watson once said the same thing.
Edited on Thu Aug-07-03 09:34 AM by Cascadian
One of my heroes, the late great Emmett Watson had hoped for the same thing. That give the Californians a few months and they will leave because of the rain. Still hasn't happened. I do recall walking through Westlake Center years ago and this yuppie-like woman was talking to here friend sipping a latte and bitching about bad the weather was. "The weather was never like this in Marina del Rey..." ,or wherever she came from. I had to respond. "Well, just follow I-5 1200 miles south and you'll find better weather!" I responded.

Some of them put palm trees in their front yards. :eyes: What's that all about? Traffic is clogged up. Most of the developers here came from California. Much of the street gangs came from L.A.. The California based chain store Mervyn's which moved here several years ago was also called "Mervyn's California". Now you see them touting California cheese here on TV. Must I say more?

california Uber Alles!

5. Oregon and Washington are so beautiful and great
I lived in California for many years, and I've always wanted to spend some time in Portland and Seattle. I think the Pacific Northwest is going to be the future of America.

So you are anti-immigration?

6. Not anti-immigration but pro-preservation!
Edited on Thu Aug-07-03 09:44 AM by Cascadian
I just don't want my region to become another California. Sadly, some of my fellow Washingtonians and Oregonians seem to be suckered by the all-mighty dollar and are willing to sell their homes, farms, and properties to Californians. Of course, these places start to change when this happens. Ruining the character and distinctness of neighborhoods, towns, and rural areas.

Seattle is a prime example of this influx gone mad. Whole neighborhoods the have had buildings that were from the early 1900's being torn down to make way for condos and office buildings that seem out of place. It has just gotten out of hand! What is really sad is people have been driven out of these communities because they cannot afford to live or work there.

What I really want to see is other states be considered if people are going to move anywhere from Ca. There's Arizona, New Mexico,or Nevada.

Now, let me say this. I don't hate Californians, but for God sakes please let us save what we have and our heritage and quit trying to change things!

7. read Greg Pallast's "Best Democracy Money Can Buy"
He has a chapter about "small town values" that is quite interesting - how the local businessmen and property owners are willing to sell out their neighbors and their communities for a quick buck. I think you would appreciate what he says.

This explains what I would like to see in regards to saving what the Northwest has and protect it's uniquness.

9. Honestly
Did your family emerge from the floor of the old-growth forest?

This is America for gods sake, not Europe!

Hopefully you are working to preserve the quality of life that you love so much. Otherwise your moaning is just moaning.

By the way, 10 years in Oregon and I still haven't been chased away by the rain.

10. But why change everything????
Edited on Thu Aug-07-03 10:14 AM by Cascadian
What's so wrong with preserving what we have? Yes, I try to do my part and I am not moaning! Do people feel the need to have this "colonization" mentality when they come up here?

The Northwest can go forward but not at the price of sacrificing who we are. I don't want it disappearing. That's all!

Another reason to point the finger at California. Look at how many people are in California (35 million) compared to the states of Cascadia (9 million). It's like a mouse compared to a cat. Plus, you must admit that California has done a poor job at putting curbs on overdevelopment. If you don't believe me look at the sprawl of L.A.. I don't want that! I guess I view California the same way a Scot views England. California to us is what England is to Scotland in my view.

So this is why I have the concerns that I do.

17. Preserve what we have
That was my point. You cannot stop people from coming, but you can work to preserve our way of life.

The catch-22 here is that as long as Oregon and Washington are good places to live, people will want to come here. So, logically, they will stop coming when it ceases to become a good place to live.

11. A Texan, a Californian, and an Oregonian are out riding horses.
A Texan, a Californian, and an Oregonian are out riding horses. The Texan pulls out an expensive bottle of whiskey, takes a long draught, then another, and suddenly throws it into the air, pulls out his gun and shoots the bottle in mid-air. The Californian looks at him and says, "What are you doing?! That was a perfectly good bottle of whiskey!" The Texan says, "In Texas, there's plenty of whiskey and bottles are cheap." A while later, not wanting to be out-done, the Californian pulls out a bottle of champagne, takes a few sips, throws the champagne into the air, pulls out his gun and shoots it in mid-air. The Oregonian can't believe this and says, "What the heck did you do that for??? That was an expensive bottle of champagne!" The Californian says "In California, there's plenty of champagne and bottles are cheap." So a while later, the Oregonian pulls out a bottle of Widmer Hefeweizen. He opens it, takes a sip, takes another sip, then chugs the rest. He then puts the bottle back in his saddlebag, pulls out his gun, turns around and shoots the Californian. The Texan, shocked, says, "Why the did you do that!" The Oregonian replied, "Well, in Oregon we have plenty of Californians, and bottles are worth a nickel!"

14. Don't blame us: YOU are what you want to be
Edited on Thu Aug-07-03 10:29 AM by Capn Sunshine
I get really tired of California being blamed for the economic forces that are transforming landscapes from Puyallup to Bangor.

Guess what? Are we some dominant culture that you native Seattleites are just too weak to fight? I think not. I am a native Californian and what you guys so conveniently blame on us is a typical excercise in intellectual laziness.

I have been involved in the Seattle area and economy since the 70's and can tell you for a fact what is happeneing to your town might as easily be blamed on Arizonans.

Just because you suffer from growing pains is no reason to cast about for someone else to take the blame. Your freeways suck because you voted down a minor sales tax that would have created a public transportation system.

Your property values reflect the increased wealth from the dot-com boom (ever hear of Microsoft?) not some pack of crafty Californians.

"Californiazation" as you call it conveniently shifts the blame away from your lame ass weak willed civic leadership and uneducated paranoid populace who cannot resolve their conflicts about Federal funds.

Until you recognize your ills as self generated, you can't take the first step towards recovery.

15. Hurray! A state is being bashed and it's not Texas
:)

I've been to LA a couple times, and while it wasn't my bag, I do understand how the 'natives' there become attached to their lifestyle. I'm sure the same can be said about anyplace. What can be done to preserve your culture? If people are willing to sell out, who are you to tell them they can't?

16. If we could just all have the perfect place and keep it to ourselves...
"Stedman grew up in Washington, moved to Burbank, Calif., and then moved back to the Puget Sound area in 1996. Like many of his clients, he wanted a better quality of life.

People relocating from California generally tell him they're seeking good schools, increased outdoor opportunities, more-affordable housing, cleaner air and a friendlier way of life."

But you would like to keep them all in LA and let them be congested.

The only answer I can think of are groups that buy up property to preseve green-space, etc.
