Lt. Gov. Bustamante to file papers to run in recall election
I personally think that DNC Chair Terry McCauliff made a grievious tactical error when he demanded that all Democratic office holders backed Davis. Having Feinstein decide not to run today leaves the Democrats with no candidate to field as an alternative to Davis. Davis is not going to win the recall election!

There are 3 days left for a Democrat to file. I suggest that if you want a chance to keep the Governorship in Democratic hands, that you put another name in the hopper. I repeat, Davis will not survive the recall. Davis will not even carry a majority of Democratic voters.

FEINSTEIN OUT; BUSTAMANTE IN

Late Wednesday, Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, breaking ranks with fellow prominent Democrats, announced he too would take out papers Thursday to put his name on the ballot as a replacement for Davis. “He will get his papers and file them tomorrow,” said Lynn Montgomery, spokeswoman for Bustamante.

A spokesman for Davis declined comment.

1. LA Times: Lt. Gov. Bustamante news conference for Thursday morning
As the day wore on, several state officeholders were weighing a jump into the race. Chief among them was Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, who as late as Tuesday had insisted he would not be on the ballot.

Richie Ross, Bustamante's political consultant, confirmed that the lieutenant governor is poised to announce his candidacy.

"I think he's going to do it," Ross said.

He said Bustamante has scheduled a news conference for Thursday morning.

2. Cruz Bustamante is very well respected in CA.
He has enjoyed a good relationship on both sides of the aisle too, and his base support is huge.

There is a thread over in the elections forum about Ahnold and some naughty movies he made when he was a bit younger - and I don't think Cruz ever even thought of mingling carrots with a derriere, much less performing in a film with them as props.

Bad Ahnold; good on ya Cruz :)

3. I don't know of any actor that does not have embarrasing pics taken
when they were struggling. I think this orgy about Arnold's pictures are more of the kind of behavior one expects from Freepers. Remember the Clinton+cigar+Monica?

I am pleased that Bustamante is going to announce. Davis is very unpopular among Democrats, and it would be a shame to let the governorship go to someone else just because Terry MacCauliffe told the California Democrats not to run another candidate in the recall election.

4. Orgy? Strange that you would use that word.
There are no wails of gleeful abandon eminating from this quarter, but rather an attempted gentle reminder to the American moral compass aka the GOP.

IOW: Pot, meet kettle.

7. I wasn't referring to you
but I was referring to several posts I read on that topic today.

BTW, I saw Chris Matthews on Hardball get bent out of shape when one of Davis's hatched men, last name Mulholland (sic), talked about tabloids being given pictures of Arnold when he was trying to break into the movies, etc. Mathews thinks that this was out of line.

9. Ah, the "Get Arnold" thread. I don't like those kind of threads, so I
tend to not go there. And you're right - that's an "orgy". :)

10. Chris Matthews would NOT shut up about the problems Bill Clinton had
throughout the Monica days. He made a total ass of himself over it.

Hard to imagine he'd call a smudge on Arnold's rep a low blow! I heard just a fragment of that show, only long enough to hear him swear it'd be unfair to smear him, and immediately thought of that photo someone posted at DU of Arnold in the early days, in his birthday suit, showing off his muscles. It was actually comical.

Didn't know he did cheapy movies, too.

I'd like to hear Chris explain his protective impulses toward Arnold, while he raved on and on about Bill Clinton's personal life 5 times a week for a couple of years.

11. I don't know why Tweety dislikes Clinton so much
I think that there is something at the visceral level.

5. This could be a pretty good chance to catch the whole Republican Party
Edited on Thu Aug-07-03 03:30 AM by w4rma
in a bit of sexual hypocrisy with their supporting Arnold and Arnold's "carrot" videos.

It depends on how this is handled... It could be a chance to turn off some moderate Republican Christians to the Republican Party.

6. I sure do remember Clinton+cigar+Monica
And would get no small amount of satisfaction seeing some Greedy Old Pig nose rubbed in the same shit.
Is that immature and childish? You bet. Would it bother me if it were to happen? Not a lot.

8. Wait until the same thing happens to Dean in regards to abortion
Edited on Thu Aug-07-03 03:42 AM by IndianaGreen
Did Dean or his wife perform abortions? This is something that another Democratic candidate was accused of having his operatives try to dig some info on it.

What about Kerry's sexual shenanigans? The fact that he was single seems to have been lost!

Sure, we can engage in the same bullshit that the GOP has used, and you will only succeed in turning off a lot of independent voters and you will also validate the suspicion that many people have that the difference between the two major parties are merely cosmetic.

I am telling you this as a friend. Such tactics will certainly backfire with the electorate. Thankfully, Bustamante will not engage in this sort of thing!

12. Yup..
I've heard that said about Dean. If he gets the nom, I fully expect to hear about it again from the GOP, and more forcefully. (One thing that has pleased me is that his campaign hasn't stooped so low against any of The Other Eight. If dirt is found on Dubya, he's smart enough to let someone else scream about it on TV. Hands-off can be very good in some situations.)

13. We can expect the GOP to smear the Democratic nominee
whoever he or she turns out to be. They might even post pictures of the candidate making out in the car when in high school!
