Ohio poll: Bush tied with Kerry (today's Cinci Enquirer)
Survey finds splits along lines of region, race, gender, age

By Carl Weiser
Enquirer Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON - President Bush and Democrat John Kerry are in a dead heat in Ohio, the state widely considered the most important in the race for the White House.

The University of Cincinnati's Ohio Poll released Friday showed Kerry at 46 percent and Bush at 44 percent, close enough to be within the poll's plus or minus 3.9 percentage-point margin of error.

<snipping>

The split isn't just geographic: Kerry is more popular among women, Bush among men.

Young people 18 to 29 overwhelmingly support Kerry while Bush's top support is among those 45 to 64.

High school dropouts love Kerry; college graduates prefer Bush.

Don't you just love the choice of words in the last line pasted above?

3. I know
It's usually that the more educated prefer Democrats... except for those very wealthy business exec types.

2. I find this line interesting too
<The split isn't just geographic: Kerry is more popular among women, Bush among men.>

Perhaps emphasizing getting out the vote/registration among women voters is the way to go.

I hope Ohio goes overwhelmingly in Kerry's favor in November. It used to be a really strong Democratic state. What happened?

4. Ohio was *the* GOP stronghold in the 19th century
Back when the GOP had a liberal achievement to its credit--ending slavery. However, the real pro-business position of the GOP took over before long and held Ohio in its grip.

My impression is that the Democratic Party was only strong in Ohio after FDR's New Deal and when the powerful unions in Ohio (steel, autos, rubber, and mining) had the financial muscle to sponsor campaigns. Those days are gone.

One thing I learned the other day is that there has only been one Democratic governor in Ohio to win two terms, Dick Celeste. I will have to use the "scared" icon to take the place of "shuddering" :scared:

To Ohio's credit, there are a huge number of people who vote Democratic in the state. We are just going to have to work hard to add the necessary votes to win elections.
