Snopes says this one is true.

False Alarm People!

<on edit>

I'm leaving the post intact for the amusement factor alone, but I admit I got caught in the joke.

---------------

And as much as I trust Snopes I still can't, read don't want to, believe it.

http://www.snopes.com/lost/fraction.htm

13 August 1999

Jackson, MS -- Bolstered by the state of Kansas' recent measure removing the requirement for the teaching of evolution in public schools, yesterday afternoon the Mississippi legislature passed a bill eliminating fractions and decimal points from the mathematics curriculum of all public secondary schools in the state.

<snip>

School librarians expressed concern about whether they will be able to continue categorizing books according to the Dewey decimal system once the law goes into effect, but Jason Compson, chief librarian for the Greater Biloxi School District, opined that "anyone who couldn't beat that pinko Truman doesn't deserve a place of honor in our schools' libraries anyway."

And we want to wonder why foriegn born students are kicking our ass while jobs continue to go overseas?

12. Decimal Points removed so no points allowed.
Even Freepers couldn't be this stupid. I don't believe this one. Snopes is not the end all be all.

7. Ack! Irrational numbers are "nonsensical?"

This doesn't surprise me in the least. What in the hell happened since the time I was in elementary school? This has to be a conspiracy. The dumbing down is obviously a very concerted effort and funny it happened in the last 2 decades when the religious right nutballs infiltrated the school boards. Coincidink?

EDIT: Oh, I get it...Onion-esque! Sad that something so absurd could actually be taken for the truth these days.

This is the best line:

School librarians expressed concern about whether they will be able to continue categorizing books according to the Dewey decimal system once the law goes into effect, but Jason Compson, chief librarian for the Greater Biloxi School District, opined that "anyone who couldn't beat that pinko Truman doesn't deserve a place of honor in our schools' libraries anyway."

13. Actually, this is kind of annoying.

People go to Snopes to verify the trueness or falseness of a claim and if Snopes is going to throw us these curveballs when it's not even April Fool's Day then they are going to lose credibilty in the long run. That's just my opinion. Yes, the claim seems really ridiculous but so did the claim that a state (I forget which one) had replaced the word "evolution" with "Biological changes over time". That is actually TRUE,so you can never tell.

14. Yoknapatawpha County
is a fictional county from a bunch of Faulkner's novels. Looking at a map of Mississippi will show that this county doesn't exist in reality. <http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/maps/mississippi_map.html>

Sometimes fiction is crazier than truth.
