What could be OUR October surprise?
I need an optimistic thread. ;)

What are the possibilities for our October surprise?

1) John McCain decides to give it to Bush for everything Bush did to him. In October, he pulls a Jeffords and turns Independent, endorses Kerry, and encourages all those who have voted and supported him to vote for Kerry instead of Bush because Bush has no integrity.

2) The press after over three years of being denied access, punished, treated horribly, etc, starts to boil over. They had great years with Clinton, but the current administration's tactics of bullying and punishing them have taken their toll. It's October, they have nothing to lose... Beginning with the White House Press Corp, they all reach into their pants, respectively find their balls, and start acting like journalists instead of transcribers. Then, the rest of the media (except Fox and a few others) unleash hell on the Bush administration. They ask the questions they were too scared to ask for fear of retribution. They make the statements they feared making before. They open a supersized can of whoop ass.

Humor me. What other October surprises could work in our favor?

1. Colin Powell resigns
and holds a press conference damning the lies of bush and rumsfeld.

Novak, on his death bed, admits who outed plame to him and tells the world his motives were merely political.

bush senior admits in a national review interview that his sons economic policies are a total disaster to the country. The NR's attempt to hold publication of the issue until after the election becomes front page news in itself.

3. An oil executive with a tinge of conscience
tells morley safer of 60 minutes on the last Sunday of October that cheney's energy task force gave bush a wish list which included taking iraqi oil fields, by force if necssary, and ensuring halliburton got no bid contracts. And that he was told by cheney that WMD had nothing to do with going to war, it was all about oil.

I truly believe the above is exactly what the energy task force envisioned, otherwise why the secrecy, why the insistance the tony the fixer be involved in the adjudication of the secrecy?

5. We need a catalyst for that to happen...
:scared:

And what sort of catalyst would be *-friendly?

I can think of a few atrocities, but they're too ghastly to contemplate.

8. I'm hoping that
Edited on Sat Mar-20-04 11:11 AM by NewHampshireDem
your John McCain prediction comes true.

But, I don't think it is going to be an October surprise. I think it is going to be a summer surprise: Mike Moore's "Farenheit 911." When the general public sees laid out before them everything that most of us in the know already know they are going to be, well, uber-pissed. I hope Mike puts up an image of Americans stranded in airports around the country, thousands of miles away from their loved ones, while Bin Laden's family were airlifted home.

11. Last I had heard ...
It was a summer release. There was a rumor circulating that he was going to release it ON election day, but I don't think that ever came from Moore himself. I believe he is going to screen it at Cannes--which would make sense, as Cannes awarded BfC its prize for best documentary--and Cannes is in mid-May. Then it would go into wide release in August. A google search yeilded a couple of references to a possible Sept. release, to coincide with the Repug National Convention.

Keep me informed if you get a solid date on this.

14. I can tell you this much
a camera crew was filming locally about three weeks ago. I can only hope it comes out before the election, but never had the chance to ask.

12. I agree about Fahrenheit 911
The last update I saw (late last year) said that the film was expected just prior to the US elections. I also seem to remember that originally, Mel Gibson's Icon Productions was going to finance the film!! I think Miramax is doing it now, but I'm not sure...

15. My Wish: Bush tapes to CNP made public
I want these tapes from Bush's speech to the Council for National Policy to come out:

In 1999, candidate George W. Bush spoke before a closed-press CNP session in San Antonio. His speech, contemporaneously described as a typical mid-campaign ministration to conservatives, was recorded on audio tape.

(Depending on whose account you believe, Bush promised to appoint only anti-abortion-rights judges to the Supreme Court, or he stuck to his campaign "strict constructionist" phrase. Or he took a tough stance against gays and lesbians, or maybe he didn't).

The media and center-left activist groups urged the group and Bush's presidential campaign to release the tape of his remarks. The CNP, citing its bylaws that restrict access to speeches, declined. So did the Bush campaign, citing the CNP.

16. Incontrovertible proof of LIHOP or MIHOP involvement in 9/11.
Unfortunately I don't think this is going to happen. But it's the _only_ thing I can see making any inroads into that 30%+ of voters who think Bush* and his buddies are such godly men.

And even if it came out, some of them wouldn't believe it.
