Help! What am I?
Because I have been listening to a lot of talk radio lately, I don’t know what I am anymore. I always thought I was a moderate with some liberal tendencies. But according to the radio that means that I am a communist and I hate America, U.S. soldiers, personal freedoms, history, baseball, truth and justice, not to mention many other things. I’ll admit that I don’t like apple pie, but I love my right not to like it.
So I am asking for your help. What am I? The following is a list of my various social and political beliefs:
Baseball is still the national past time
I don’t think you can have a tax cut and a war at the same time. Choose only one
Motorcycle cops should only ride Harley-Davidsons
Gay marriage will not lead to BI-species nuptials
The Patriot Act is a white flag in the war against terrorism
Every citizen has the right to bear arms
“Arms” should have reasonable limits
I am outraged about Janet
It should’ve been Brittney
War should be an absolute last resort
If you win a war, you should be able to keep the defeated country
More people should get involved in the Arts
We should have a low flat tax rate with a federal sales tax
Figure Skating is not a sport
The death penalty should only be used in cases with absolute proof, and then it should be carried out as soon as possible.
The minimum wage should be tied to congress’ salary – if they get a 15% raise, so does the kid at McDonalds.
A punter in the NFL should not be making more than soldier on the front line
I believe that every time George W comes out they should play “Fortunate son” by Creedence Clearwater Revival
There was a shooter on the grassy knoll
War should be financed through pay-per-view fees
Morality should be practiced not legislated

1. A Libertarian Socialist.
Why?

"The minimum wage should be tied to congress’ salary – if they get a 15% raise, so does the kid at McDonalds."

Or CEO salaries, either way it's equitable.

"A punter in the NFL should not be making more than soldier on the front line"

A Leveller too?

No worries, so am I:-)

17. You know they don't *own* the word "libertarian"?
From the standpoint of personal proclivities almost anyone can be one.

The economic equity side doesn't necessarily conflict withe the desire to wed someone of the same sex or hit the bong.

29. I agree
and furthermore...

I really think that in order to make any progress on improving our society, we need to stop looking to political parties to form our opinions for us and we need to stop having opinions just because they are the beliefs of a particular party. We need to educate ourselves think about it and THEN form our opinions. I truly think that is the root of what our big problem is today...people just believe what others tell them and that if they are republican, they must be against abortion because all republicans are against abortion....and if they are democrat, they must be against the war because all dems are against the war.

Bravo to the original post for having your own opinions! Who cares what you are? You are YOU! And that is all that matters

11. About the flat tax
I believe that a flat tax with a federal sales tax would get the wealthier more wasteful people to contribute more into the national kitty. Plus it would help keep me from hating the 16 year old punk driving the brand new Porsche.

19. The problem with sales taxes is that they are regressive
Edited on Wed Mar-17-04 08:18 AM by kayell
Poor people have to spend all or virtually all of their income, while richer people can put a substantial amount of money away in investments that will not be taxed by a sales tax. The scheme you are talking about sounds very simple, but would disproportionately burden the poor.

Otherwise, I think you are mostly a somewhat liberal something with a sense of humor. Welcome to DU. :hi:

Hits poor people, not the rich. If you wanna take away their porches, a luxury tax or something, but i have to say i agree with almost everythign except your tax ideas.

Welcome to DU, btw.. :toast: :hi:

A good position to be in. Not sure about that flat tax. You might actually be that "moderate with some liberal tendencies", and not the fake sort of radical fascist that sometimes tries to pass as "moderate". You might be surprised how often that comes up, but then I guess such types can't be honest about themselves.. those guys on talk radio--really not "moderates" and haven't a right to designate what that means (I guess I don't either, for the same reasons, but I digress).

You might be disturbed to know that I agree with most of that, and I really am that guy who is a communist and hates America, U.S. soldiers, personal freedoms, history, baseball, truth and justice, not to mention many other things (well, sort of/not really). I'm also hiding under your bed, and have sentries waiting in the closets of children everywhere to attack while they sleep.

What do you mean by this?--
...If you win a war, you should be able to keep the defeated country...

12. The "keep the defeated country"
line is there because I believe that if war was truly an all or nothing proposition there would be much less of it. Face it, if you were the leader of a struggling third world country you would have to consider going to war against the US. Cause when it's over we fix the roads, schools, hospitals, bridges, parks and recreation, etc... I tried to get my city to get Bush to attack us but we couldn't figure out how to do it. We thought if we did what Iraq did, we'd be home free. But the answer kept changing. Finally we decided it was useless because Bush daddy didn't have unfinished business here.

20. war isn't always about defeating a country,
even if war is used as a last resort.

ie wrt ww2 i'd argue that not only other europeans but also the german people were liberated from a dictator; should the US have been allowed to "keep" Germany?

8. i agreed with you up to the punter point
The Carolina Panthers would not have done as well as they have without Todd Sauerbrun punting for them. I think Todd Sauerbrun's ability to punt the ball so frequently within the opponent's 20 yard line was more beneficial to this country than anything a soldier has ever done.

26. Elvis Costello put it all in perspective years ago when he wrote.....
.....Radio radio. Turn off your damned RADIO!

I was tuning in the shine on the light night dial
Doing anything my radio advised
With every one of those late night stations
Playing songs bringing tears to my eyes
I was seriously thinking about hiding the receiver
When the switch broke 'cause it's old
They're saying things that I can hardly believe
They really think we're getting out of control

(CHORUS) Radio is a sound salvation
Radio is cleaning up the nation
They say you better listen to the voice of reason
But they don't give you any choice 'cause they think that it's treason
So you had better do as you are told
You better listen to the radio

I wanna bite the hand that feeds me
I wanna bite that hand so badly
I want to make them wish they'd never seen me

Some of my friends sit around every evening
And they worry about the times ahead
But everybody else is overwhelmed by indifference
And the promise of an early bed
You either shut up or get cut up, they don't wanna hear about it
It's only inches on the reel-to-reel
And the radio is in the hands of such a lot of fools
Tryin' to anesthetize the way that you feel

(REPEAT CHORUS)

Wonderful radio
Marvelous radio
Wonderful radio
Radio, radio
(FADE)

The Internet is more dangerous than guns! G. W. Bush*
