How would you check that your voter registration hasn't been purged?
I've been thinking about this - all these people showed up in Florida for the 2000 general elections and found out they'd been removed from the voter rolls before the election (see http://www.gregpalast.com/columns.cfm?subject_id=1&subject_name=Theft%20of%20Presidency if you want to know more about this). I don't know much about if they still do the purge or whatever, but it seems like one of the only ways to prevent this is to call up and check every now and then to make sure you're still on. Who for sure would you call about this? The secretary of state's office? Some other election authority? Does it vary by state? And what states are out there that remove felons from the voting records (which have a risk of removing more than just that)? If we pool our resources, we might be able to collect enough information to make sure we and our Democratic friends don't end up stranded on election day.

1. I checked by voting in the primary.
I didn't feel any particular need to vote in the primary, as it was all sewn up anyway, but we decided to vote to make sure we were actually on the books, since we have moved since we last voted. You pose a good question, though. We COULD be purged before the general election without even knowing it.

2. in OK and IA just voted every election - no matter how 'minor'
I think at one time in OK and maybe also IA, names were automatically removed if the voter had not voted for a year (or a bit longer?).

3. I checked with my local Township Officials in '02.
They checked everyone in my family, and discovered one son had been purged due to his lack of a birthdate. They asked me to confirm his birthdate, I did. They asked me how I knew & I told them; "I am his mother and I was THERE." They accepted that. I suppose I ought to check again - just to be sure. Call your local town or city officials - they're supposed to be on file there.
