Cross posted from LBN - concerning the woman who has been arrested for being a US spy for Saddam's Bathists

Someone please check the name of the accused, Susan Lindauer.

Cross reference: Lockerbie trial deposition by a woman of the same name who claimed to have been approached by cia asset who claimed bombers were syria-based, not libya.

She was muzzled, harrassed, life endangered, etc.

I cannot recall details and cannot research today.

Is this the same Susan Lindauer?

go to it, researchers, I'll dig later tonight

Lockerbie Trial Document: Susan Lindauer Deposition
4 December 1998

Snip..."I first met Dr. Richard Fuisz in his business office in Chantilly, Virginia in the United States of America. The date was September,1994. I had been invited to meet Dr. Fuisz by a mutual acquaintance because of my position as press secretary to former Congressman Ron Wyden (a Democrat from Oregon), and because of my known longstanding interest in the Middle East. Wyden is now a United States Senator, and I have continued my career in TV journalism and public affairs."

Snip..."Dr. Fuisz asked for my help as a congressional staffer because he said he had a problem. After testifying before a congressional committee about an American company that supplied Iraq with SCUD mobile missile launchers, he complained of being seriously harassed in lawsuits and by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. Efforts by his attorneys to stop this harassment had been answered with warnings from the highest levels that he should never have talked about U.S. arms supplies to Iraq, and that he should stop trying to contact families tied to Pan Am 103."

Just read carefully - here is initial Iraq connection...talking about US firms selling scuds to Iraq, and testimony being muzzled.

whoa...libya, syria, iraq, today's bombings, bush ads, markets in peril...

time for coffee and a smoke, methinks

thanks for finding this.

5. It Appears To Be Her.

May 28, 2000 SHO Story

-SNIP-
One month before a court order was served on him by the US government gagging him from speaking on the grounds of national security, he spoke to US congressional aide Susan Lindauer, telling her he knew the identities of the Lockerbie bombers and claiming they were not Libyan.

Lindauer, shocked by Fuisz's claims, immediately compiled notes on the meeting which formed the basis of a later sworn affidavit detailing Fuisz's claims. One month after their conversation, in October 1994, a court in Washington DC issued an order barring him from revealing any information on the grounds of "military and state secrets privilege".
-SNIP-

-SNIP-
The indictment said Lindauer met on two occasions in Baltimore in June and July with an undercover FBI agent who posed as a Libyan intelligence representative who was seeking to support resistance groups in postwar Iraq. It said she discussed the need for plans and foreign resources to support these groups.
-SNIP-

Sounds like a case of entrapment to me. The FBI knew that she may be sympathetic to Libya so they used that to ensnare her. Did you scoop this?

Theres Libya again! Something is rotten here. Anybody with journalist connections might want to pass this piece of loose thread along.

Pull hard on it and see what unravels, and what lies beneath.

So if it is her, this puts a whole lotta new spin on today's story, don't it!

Off the top of my head, I have no friggin' idea what its about or what it might mean, am going to have to look real close at this one.

Anyone feel free to posit a theory at this early point?

Thanks to you all.

See you in the streets.

8. It Could Be A...
"HE tried to kill my Daddy" vendetta. Look at this from the CNN story.

http://www.cnn.com/2004/LAW/03/11/iraq.spy.case.ap/index.html

-SNIP-
There, she met with several members of the Iraqi Intelligence Service, the foreign intelligence arm of the Iraqi government that allegedly has played a role in terrorist operations, including an attempted assassination of former President George H.W. Bush, the indictment alleged.
-SNIP-

Seems a little thin though.

10. Possibly Related?
There was limited October coverage on the release of Edwin Wilson, imprisoned since early 80's for selling plastique to Libya. He argued he did it for the CIA. I had some impression the operation started when GHWB was CIA but might have been completed later. Judge denounced govt. Think this still works:

http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2003/10/29/1067233244563.html

Crossed my mind at the time that there might be some Lockerbie issue here. February decision not to retry Wilson. Think this still works:

http://www.dfw.com/mld/startelegram/news/state/7899636.htm

Not enough for defensible theorizing, but seeing this thread wondered if (1) old US-Libya ties are really uncomfortable for somebody and (2) if there's not a political motive for the current charge.

11. Interesting linkages.
The Lockerbie bombing has a fascinating unofficial history that has nothing to do with Libya, and much to do with the protected drug trade between Lebanon's Bekka Valley and the US. Read - if you can find it - Trail of the Octopus. Lester Coleman was stitched up, much like Lindauer seems to have been. The book is unavailable in the US, though used copies are sold on Amazon for hundreds of dollars.

Portions of it can be read here:

http://www.american-buddha.com/trail.octopus.htm

Need to keep this kicked while we try to sort out what's going on.

today. Dobbs played the video and to paraphrase her, she said, "I am an anti-war activist and that is all. I am proud of what I have done for my country and my country's security". Seeing as I do not know what to make of this case yet, I will say it was a moving moment.

18. Why do they want to go after this woman now?
Something is weird. Who filed an indictment in the U.S. District Court in Manhattan today? The article doesn't bother to mention who did this? Plus, who are the two brothers?

Is this someone's spring surprise? This story has the potential to go some very interesting places. Why would someone want to open this particular can of worms? I think this poor woman is just an unwitting pawn in something much bigger? The whole Lockerby thing goes straight back to Bu$h Sr and the Iran Contra scandal and that's a very damaging can of worms for Bu$hCo to have opened.

A former journalist and one-time press secretary for four members of Congress was arrested Thursday on charges she served as a paid agent for the Iraqi intelligence service before and after the U.S. invasion.

<snip>

The charges against Lindauer were included in an expanded indictment in the case against Raed Rokan Al-Anbuge, 28, and Wisam Noman Al-Anbuke, the sons of Iraq's former liaison with United Nations weapons inspectors.

The brothers were charged last year with acting as Iraqi government agents and conspiring to do so, prosecutors said. The indictment said Lindauer conspired with the brothers.

the "Iraqi government agent" charge is a technical violation. It's looking more and more to me like she was an aggressive loose cannon trying to negotiate (without any official sanction) for a compromise on letting inspectors into Iraq. She may simply not have realized how deep the water is.

25. Found some info on Raed Rokan Al-Anbuge
He is one of the two brothers who was arrested last year in NY, whose case is the one that was expanded to include the arrest of Lindauer.

Accused Iraqi agent says he's working for U.S.

NEW YORK - A former Iraqi diplomat's son accused of aiding Iraqi spies was actually helping the United States and plans to seek asylum, his lawyer said Tuesday.

The lawyer, Thomas Nooter, spoke on behalf of Raed Rokan Al-Anbuge, 28, after the son of Iraq's former liaison with United Nations weapons inspectors appeared briefly in federal court.

Al-Anbuge was charged Monday with illegally aiding Iraqi government agents, but Nooter said most of the information in the criminal complaint came from his client as he cooperated with the FBI during the past two years.

"If he was an agent of anybody, he was an agent of us," Nooter said.

Another strange tibbit about Raed, remember Salam Pax the Iraqi blogger. There was speculation last year when Raed was arrested that he was Salam Pax.

This story gets weirder by the minute.

Most of the articles are about how she worked for Democratic legislators who voted against the IWR or were otherwise hostile to Our Wise and Courageous Leader.
