Presidents could replace Sacagawea
Castle co-sponsors dollar coin proposal; experts say $1 bill needs to be eliminated.

WASHINGTON -- Sacagawea would make way for the faces of U.S. presidents under a proposal aimed at breathing new life into the little-used dollar coin.

Reps. Mike Castle, R-Del., and Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., introduced legislation Tuesday for a rotating design approach - similar to the popular 50-state quarter program - to spur interest in the coins.

The image of Sacagawea, the Shoshone Indian who helped Lewis and Clark find their way to the Pacific Ocean, is currently on the coin. The Sacagawea dollar has failed to catch on since it was unveiled in 2000.

Under the legislative proposal, a president would be put on the front of the coin and the Statue of Liberty would be on the back. Four presidents would be honored each year, in the order that they served the country. The U.S. Mint would start issuing the new designs in 2006.

There are not a lot of Presidents that I think are not worthy to be on a dollar coin.

If i ran the mint this is what I would do:

Everybody is on a coin or bill once. Currently Linlcon and Washington are on 2. Since the 2 dollar bill is not being produced, Jefferson is only one on.

Penny - Harry S Truman on the front, WW2 memorial on the back
Nickel - stays the same
Dime - FDR for now, maybe someday Bill Clinton, White house on the back
Quarter - Washington stays on the front, Extend the 50 state quarter program for another year to include DC, Puerto Rico, Virgin Island, Guam, and Northern Marianas Islands
Half Dollar - MLK, Jr. on the front, scene of the crowd at the mall during the "I have a dream" speech on the back
Dollar - The only other presidents who might deserve to be on the dollar are the Adamses and maybe TR, so instead of presidents how about great americans on the front, Jonas Salk, Frederick Douglas, Wright Brothers, Jackie Robinson, John Glenn, if that proves to political we can go with animals: Alligator, Buffalo, Manatee, Condo, Armadillo, on the back maybe a map of the country or the globe

$1 eliminated
$5 stays with Lincoln
$10 stays with Hamilton
$20 Adams on the front, Independence Hall on the back
$50 stays with Grant
$100 stays with Franklin

What do you think?

1. The dollar coin will never be widely used as long as it so closely
Edited on Thu Mar-11-04 11:53 AM by SoCalDem
resembles quarters..

And if they make it bigger, it's a pain to carry around.. We could do without pennies.. round up or down to the nickel..

eliminate dimes...

eliminate the 50 cent piece and make it the "new" dollar coin..(same size as the half)

eliminate the 1 and bring back the $2 bill..

9. eliminating pennies will screw the poor
If the penny were eliminated, businesses would do whatever they could to make sure the rounding is always up instead of down. Basically, if they used to charge $1.96 for it, they're going to change the price to $2.00, rather then leave it as it is and run the risk of downward rounding.

So everything in the grocery store would cost a few cents extra. That can translate into a few dollars for a large trip, which could be a burden for working people who would then be quite literally nickled-and-dimed.

18. How do you account for the Canadian $1 coin?
It is not only used, it is popular. They even have a cute name for it - the "loonie", for the duck-like waterfowl on its reverse side.

The paper dollar bill has to go. Period. It would save the taxpayers a lot of money besides.

2. I think we should do the Canadian thing
and have $1 and $2 coins and eliminate the dollar bill, as you suggested.

4. Agree wholeheartedly -- and it's not just Canadian
The Euro is set up on the same system. Smallest bill denomination is 5 Euros, with coins for 1 and 2 Euros.

Of course, when I used to work part-time as a valet, I'm not so sure it would have been a great idea. When you can clear $70-100 in tips on a Friday or Saturday night and it's all paid out in singles, it can make for some pretty heavy pockets!

17. I go to college in Canada
and I think the dollar and 2 dollar coins are crappy. They're not very useful, and if you want them to add up to anything you have to carry a huge change bag. It's not practical.

3. i hate carrying change!
I hate it I hate it I hate it. In my pocket I currently have 8 singles, If that were 8 heavy coins id wouldnt carry them.

The world is moving away from currency anyway, lets just stick with paper dollars until everything is paid for with a card.

19. I agree!!
They are always falling out of my pocket when I sit down. I don't mind losing a few pennies or dimes between the cushions, but not dollar coins.

Americans have shown many times starting with Susan B Anthony that they don't like dollar coins.

5. well, i think...
... you have a lot of good ideas here.

Truman definitely deserves to be on a coin, as does TR. But do we really still need pennies? They all end up in the Coinstar anyways.

I'm thinking the presidential dollar thing is meant for its collectibility. The Mint does a brisk business with the staties, and what numismatics buff wouldn't want to have a Rutherford B. Hayes dollar?

Personally, I would love to see your suggestion of putting North American animals on the dollars. Maybe even endangered ones (the grizzly bear, the condor, the egret) to raise awareness. But realistically, I doubt we're going to convince the Treasury Dept. to pick something other than famous DWiMs.

6. feature sports teams
Every year produce new bills and coins featuring the winners:

World Series - 100 dollar bill
Super Bowl - 50
NBA - 20
etc., and use college teams for the coins. On the back would be the logos of the shoe companies that sponsor each team.

<sarcasm off>

12. I agree.
Although Lewis and Clark didn't think highly of her French Canadian husband. I would support having other Native American leaders on currency. The Indians helped white people more than hurting them. The Native Americans hold an honored place in our history.

10. So let me see if I understand ...
People use a particular currency because of the President or symbolism on the coin?

So if I have a Florida quarter in my pocket I'm supposed to say, "Screw that ... I ain't using this baby" and throw it away ... or refuse to accept it as change?

We should do what the Aussies did ... dump all bills under $5, dump all coins under 5c and round all transactions.

21. No presidents!!!
What do you think?

I think we should not have any presidents on our money. We should have Americans that have made a contribution to the nation, like Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Sacagawea is nice to have on the dollar coin, and maybe Red Jacket would be another good person to have on a coin. Or we certainly could have flowers and birds on our coins as many other nations have.

BTW, Michael Castle is an idiot.

22. Keep the $1 bill...
Having that bill with George on it is just TOO IMPORTANT a national symbol!

And DON'T replace Sacagewea...

She helped Lewis and Clark discover a passage through what is now 1/3 of our nation...to the Pacific Northwest!

And...NO Reagan, Bush I or Harding...Having Grant on the $50 is bad enough!:eyes:

B-)
