Resource for voter demographics?
Does anyone know a good resource for voter demographics? I am interested in national summaries. I don't have time today to do a search and thought someone here might know of an on-line source off the top of his/her head. Thanks!

1. Have you checked US Census Bureau data?
Try http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/voting.html

That may be your only source. The states all have different systems of their own, and it would be a real pain to try to compile state-level data into meaningful national summaries.

2. Not a complete source
But you may find the 2000 exit poll helpful:

3. I realized that I asked the wrong question
Thank you, HFishbine - as soon as I clicked on your link I realized that I had framed the question badly. What I am looking for is summaries showing the % of population who vote/don't vote in Nat elections, and any corrolary information re: income/race. (Where we get statements like "most poor people don't vote)

Any and all help vastly appreciated!

5. This site gives a pretty good breakdown by state

But a quick scan didn't turn up nationwide demographics.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/elections/2004/il/

on second edit, if you look at the state demographics it compares it to the national so maybe it can help. first edit, spelun.

7. federal election commission
http://www.fec.gov/sitemap1.html

Not sure if it's the best source for demographics. It does have this list way at the bottom.

Voter Registration and Turnout in Federal Elections by Age - 1972-1996

Voter Registration and Turnout in Federal Elections by Gender - 1972-1996

Voter Registration and Turnout in Federal Elections by Race/Ethnicity - 1972-1996

Voter Registration and Turnout in Presidential Elections by State - 1960-1992

Voter Registration and Turnout in Presidential Elections by Year - 1960-1992
