BBV-Machine in my precinct screwed up this AM
By 9:30 this morning at my precinct in Austin, TX one (of 6) machine was having problems. This is not a Diebold machine, it is a system called E-Slate.

Apparently a voter wanted to skip over a race but the machine would not let her finish casting a ballot until she voted in a race she did not want to vote in.

1. Is it broken
or it designed to do that?

2. I claim it's broken
No one should be forced to vote in a race they don't want to or don't know enough about the candidates to make a meaningful choice (we've ended up with some very interesting judges because of confusion). And there is no option for "no vote".

3. Please post this report at Bev's forum.
http://www.blackboxvoting.org Click on forums and register if you need to. All reports of machine problems and irregularities are collected there in real time, so it's really important to post there.

5. Some systems do require a choice before moving ahead
But these systems must include the choice of "no vote" -- I take it that this did not include such a choice?

Need a private email to Bevharrismail@aol.com with contact info.

8. Dunno. They gave me a tape.

I myself haven't seen it. Gonna do something for Canadian broadcasting in an hour. If NBC does something tonight, as I hear they will, that will be great.

A word to everyone who is doing interviews and talking with public officials: The latest talking point, and they are ALL using it: "There haven't been any problems." I'm kicking myself because I didn't answer that by pointing out that 103,000 votes didn't get counted in the last major election in Florida, the equivalent of 1,000 ballot boxes. They later found the votes, calling it a "glitch."

11. Is CBC a TV or radio thing?
I'll watch the CBC News email for their story list for this evening's "The National."

Thanks for all the good work. This issue is quickly moving beyond the simmering stage.

12. Bev, has anyone formatted a printable, numbered list.....
.....of all the known and reported problems that have occurred? (aside from what is in the book. :) ) It would really help to have a list in hand to throw back in their faces with the admonition that "These are just the ones that have been caught! Do you deny that these reported events took place?" It would make it kind of hard for them to continue speaking along those lines.

9. Make that FIVE places!
Be sure to file a complaint with your Secretary of States office and your county elections officials. Consult this page for a List of Voter Registrars by County to find your local officials contact information. :)

While you're at it read the Poll Watchers Guide and Texas Election Code to learn more about your rights.

Questions and comments may be sent to: elections@sos.state.tx.us , or you may phone the Elections Division toll-free at 1-800-252-VOTE(8683).

Let them know we're watching! Keep breathing down their necks.

16. Great stuff, as usual, PP
Damn, I missed you again while in California. It turned into a goofy trip -- Good Morning America called and suddenly decided I should get on a plane the next day -- no, scratch that, later in the same day -- no, change of plans, get on a plane in an hour (!) -- this meant renting a one-way car because I had gigs all the way up the coast and had to get back to Seattle by a certain time.

Next trip we'll do the Merlot and diabolically effective planning thing, OK?.

Yes, we need that numbered list. I have lost my subscription to Factiva. Someone with Lexis or Factiva would have to run all the search terms for Diebold, voting machine, glitch, e-voting, and all the related terms to pull the stories. I only pulled 100 for Chapter 2 of the book. There are at least a hundred new ones. Yes, we need it.

17. Done
The supervisor at the county said it sounded like the election judges screwed up, not the machine. I agree that the judges (who seemed baffled by their rubber stamps) may have screwed up handling the problem, but it was only because the machine itself had some kind of glitch.

He did say he would pass the information on to those who "needed to know"

The volunteer answering the phone at the party will likewise pass my concerns up the food chain.
