HARRISBURG, Pa. - Gov. Ed Rendell said that the timing and politics aren't right for him to become Democratic Sen. John F. Kerry's running mate in this year's presidential election, should the opportunity be extended.
Asked about it Friday, Rendell said Kerry needs a vice presidential candidate who is from a Republican-leaning state that provides better geographical diversity.

"I haven't achieved all the things that I wanted to achieve here in Pennsylvania," Rendell said. "So the time isn't right for me."
Rendell's name has come up, along with a couple dozen others, among political observers in Washington, D.C., in speculation over whom Kerry will select.

Asked how he would respond if Kerry insisted that he join the ticket, Rendell replied that "that's not going to happen. But if it did happen, of course, as an American, I would probably say 'Yes.'"
