Religion and Nationalism
Edited on Thu Mar-04-04 03:13 PM by Solon
A fear that I carry is that the so called culture wars have been a cold war of sorts and will possibly heat up, regardless of the outcome of the presidential election. I find it extremely disturbing that Fundamentalists link Godliness with Nationalism. Their goal, ultimately is to transform the government from an officially secular one to their brand of Christianity. I fear the collision that will occur between the Religious Right and the Religious and Secular Left.

Remember, many on the Right consider Bush to be God's anointed president. That cannot be stressed enough, they have a value system that it fundamentally against democracy and protection for minorities, ALL minorities. Unlike most on the left, many on the right are not above committing violence in the name of God. We hear about such violence from Operation Rescue, and other groups and individuals. In addition to this, they equate America with some special plan of God's, as if the United States is supposed to be God's New Kingdom on Earth. Any that oppose their goals, are in their minds, minions of Satan, to be ultimately destroyed, if not in the "End Times" then after they established their kingdom in the United States.

If they could, they probably would declare Bush as King, for the opposition to democracy and the Constitution is that strong. Fortunately, they are a small group, but loud, and taking things to an extreme. How far will they take their own ideology, and force us to conform to it? Possibly armed revolution?
