Ad by black leaders: Gov. Bush gets an 'A'

High-profile black leaders help make a case for Gov. Jeb Bush's education reform efforts, including FCAT testing.

BY ERIKA BOLSTAD

ebolstad@herald.com

TALLAHASSEE - Black supporters of Gov. Jeb Bush's education policies countered Tuesday's protest in Tallahassee with their own message: a full-page newspaper ad touting the governor's education initiatives.

The Florida African American Education Alliance, which has close ties to several Broward County black leaders, unveiled the advertising on the opening day of the legislative session.

The text of the ad, which appeared in the Tallahassee Democrat, is strikingly similar to the governor's remarks on education during his session-opening speech. It applauds his efforts for raising the percentage of African-American students reading at grade level and increasing the number of black students taking college entrance exams.

But some black Democrats wonder if the ad -- and its praise for the governor's education initiatives -- might be a thinly veiled attempt to persuade more black voters to cast ballots for his brother in November.

2. Well, if the education numbers are accurate...
...then they can't very well say he is failing can they? Not on this issue anyway.

3. That is refreshing to see; belief in numbers coming from the Bush
administration. ANY Bush administration.

Hey, I live in Florida and I don't see ANYBODY benefitting from the BushCo programs. Perhaps you could point me to some facts and figures that portray this as anything but political hackwork at its most typical.

Until then, as far as Jeb Bush is concerned, I believe nothing of what I hear, and less of what I read. Seems like a workable program.

4. Go ask the people supporting Jeb.
I don't live in FL, and don't have any read on the state of your State. I have too many issues nationally and locally to be able to keep track in your state. Being informed and finding those numbers are going to have to be your responsibility. It is your issue after all.

7. Off hand, it seems you brought up these numbers in the first place.
I'm simply stating that numbers generated in Florida or in Brother George's Washington are automatically suspect.

8. Why?
Particularly if they have been looked at by people who have as much to distrust the Bush family over as we do, and vastly more experience with the Fla education system.

With the people who are the best liars not everything they say is a lie. The best deceptions are layered in truth and half truths. The best liars lie only occassionally and tell you the truth because it suits them to do so and it dosen't hurt their position.

5. Based on what W did with education numbers in Texas
Then I would say that any statistic at all, of any kind, making a Bush look good for society is highly dubious

6. Yeah, they might WANT to vote for Bush in FL
But they might not be able to. They might get turned away, and told that they cannot vote because their name resembles that of a felon.

I wonder how many of these supporters know what happened in their state in 2000?
