Other than imperialist masturbation, WTF do we gain from a Haitian Coup?!
At least with Chavez and Hussien, and even the Taliban, the Bush clan had some level of plutocratic logic to the actions (i.e., kill the tin-pot dictator and take the "darkies" natural resources.). But Haiti makes no sense. There's barely anything there. The French and Spanish took most of the damn gold before the revolution of 1804. There aren't many natural resources. And there aren't enough Haiti in any part of the country to tilt the vote in any way. So, why haiti?! Shed some light for this rather confused liberal.

5. Don't underestimate the allure of imperialist masturbation...
(reposted from my reply to this exact same post in another thread)

What did the US gain from invading Grenada?
Or even Vietnam, for that matter?

Here's a thread that highlights some of the possible motivations:

But don't underestimate the pull of radical ideologues in the Bush administration. I haven't actually heard them use the phrase 'Domino Theory' yet, but you can bet it's on the mind of people like Otto Reich and Roger Noriega.

8. Well, Clinton restored democracy in Haiti...
Edited on Wed Mar-03-04 11:38 AM by RUFUS_T_FIREFLY
...when he used the threat of force to make the coup leaders step down a few years back (no loss of American or Haitian lives), putting Aristide back into his democratically elected postion.

And, since it was CLINTON that did it, Aristide must be opposed by Smirk and his band.

11. Some good answers but the NOW
suggests that it is an easy reassertion of some control to encourage the very burned Venezuelan opposition and the disgruntled Cuban exiles. The first coup was a comic disaster and Iraq is not all that encouraging an example.

They shrugged off the loss of Venezuelan oil as a big chip to carry into Iraq, but they are even more desperate now. I note how the Venezuelans are at the very same time escalating their own attempts, matching position for position the Haitian "rebellion". Of course they want all of the above eventually, but most of all they want the economic impact of Venezuelan crude, even as a boost for stock market psychology. The whole world may be scared enough to be complicit on that one alone.
