Faith-Based Paperless Voting on Trial

Growing Scrutiny Spurs Movement for a Transparent Elections

As voters go to the polls today to choose the Presidential nominees for the Democrat Party and to advise the Assembly on the the future design of Georgia's flag, more and more voters and media professionals join those who are scrutinizing Georgia's elections. This evening, ABC's Nightline will broadcast its report on the subject featuring interviews with Secretary of State Cathy Cox and with Roxanne Jekot, a Cumming Georgia programmer and an activist for transparent elections who reviewed the source code for Georgia's proprietary voting machine software which was left on an unsecured ftp site by Diebold, Incorporated.

"Concern for the transparency and integrity of Georgia elections continues to grow," said Hugh Esco, chair of the Voter Choice Coalition and political coordinator of the Georgia Green Party. The Green Party office phone started ringing early this morning with reports of anomolies and problems from the Diebold machines. "We're pleased that this important issue has finally begun to gain some of the attention it deserves."

"I look forward to the hearing on Thursday when we can point the legislators to the election laws which already require voter verified paper ballots," said Ms. Jekot, referring to Thursday's 4:00 pm meeting of the Senate State and Local Government Operations Committee to which SB-500 has been assigned. The Committee is expected to see demonstrations of Diebold's election machines (used in Georgia) as well as those of a competitor's machines which already provides a paper ballot for verification by the voter and the auditing of the electronic count. Paper Ballot activists hope the Committee will be ready to take action on SB-500 once they've seen what is possible.

"Nightline" is carried by ABC affiliates across Georgia, starting at 11:30 pm.

Fox have already done several items... as have CBS I beleive... so that's the lot... Network TV is on board this train... (Or is NBC still in the wilderness on this one - on edit) all we need now is a full head of steam...

Diebold will never know what hit em...

It's funny to think that it was only a year ago that the files appeared and the discussions started here... The official 1 year anniversary of this voyage isn't till July 8th...

18. Woo Woo Georgia
Way to go on BBV!

It was nice to see a little gang of folks telling it on my screen in my living room for a change. It seemed like the Nightline people kinda got it, too.

As for Cox, Cathy and Cox Enterprises, it seems like a tantalizing possibility. I spent a fair amount of time working on it, and couldn't quite nail it to say one way or the other.

Probably need to revisit it.

19. Urgent plea for West Coasters
We have a senate hearing for voter verified paper ballots this Thursday. I would love to get CDs of this Nightline piece to every senator.

Can a west coast DUer capture it for me? (And, of course, you'll have to tell me how to make copies of the thing onto CDs for the Senators if you do. I know how to write a CD-R, but how do I save the file to disk to get it to CD?)

34. The BBV segment is at the end of the show.
A vp3 version would be super :D

To install the vp3 codec just try playing any vp3 file (see DU's Media forum for some) and quicktime player will prompt you to install it. It's quite painless, and seriously has the best video quality of any codec that I've seen for the bitrate, including mpeg4.

Actually on looking a bit closer I see it is actually an AP report... so expect to see this in your paper tomorrow...

Technical Problems Reported in E-Voting
Scattered Technical Problems Reported As Electronic Voting Debuts in Super Tuesday Contests

The Associated Press

SAN JOSE, Calif. March 2 — Electronic voting made its debut in cities and towns from Maryland to California on Tuesday as election officials beefed up security for the record number of voters expected to cast E-ballots for the first time.
Scattered technical problems were reported in the early hours as voters in 10 states, including California, New York and Ohio, went to the Super Tuesday polls to choose a Democratic presidential nominee and decide primary contests for congressional and state races.

They also have this report

-Voting Machines Run Into Some Problems
Scattered Problems Reported With Electronic Voting Machines, Largely Attributed to Human Error

The Associated Press

Is interesting how they are running this from a news editing perspective... Super Tuesday is the main course and BBV is the desert...

http://abcnews.go.com/sections/nightline/Nightline/Nightline_email_form.html

Send them a note -

They told us how ugly the problem is...

They told us that legislation (HAVA) put us into this position...

Tell them we need help talking to the public about legislative solutions. We need HR2239/S1980 passed NOW!

I want to freaking go fishing, relax, have a life again. Let's win this and move on with our lives!
