E! online calls Tim Robbins a "Leftie Jerk".. How "apolitical" of them
Oscar Celebrates the World Entertainment Capitol--New Zealand!
http://www.eonline.com/Features/Awards/Oscars2004/BestWorst/index.html
by Erik Pedersen | Feb. 29, 2004

"It's a clean sweep!"
--Steven Spielberg, spilling the beans that LOTR had won the Best Picture award

Impeach Bush! That would be ABC's talking (air)head Billy Bush, who badgered the stars with his inane questions, did tired Uma-Oprah gags and got way too chummy with everyone, from Scarlett Johansson to Keisha Castle-Hughes.

Weren't They Supposed to Bleep Out the Bad Language? Who wrote Alphabet Network pre-show host Chris Connelly's script? We just want to know where he got cool words like "epical," "stiffish competish" and "Oscar nominatable."

...snip....

Longest-Held Breath: That had to be the tape-delay person during Tim Robbins' speech, when, after thanking his fellow nominees, castmembers and family, he said the words no censor ever wants to hear: "I would like to say one more thing..." Though he didn't make a political statement, Robbins did urge the victims of abuse to come forward to get help. Leftie jerk.

Tie: Best Self-Deflating Joke and/or Best Wish Fulfillment: Depending on your point of view, Michael Moore's cameo--in which the firebrand rails against the "fictitious war" waged in The Lord of the Rings before getting crushed by an elephant--was either hilarious or a dream come true.

....snip....

"Forty years ago, this country went down a rabbit hole in Vietnam and millions died. I fear we're going down a rabbit hole again."
--Erroll Morris, whose The Fog of War won the documentary award

1. On paper it seems like she/he was being facetious....
After saying that he made a plea about abuse victims, then calling him a leftie jerk it seemed sarcastic to me.

I could be wrong. Like when someone does something nice if you say sarcastically, "Boy THAT guys is a real jerk, huh?"

2. Context seems sarcastic
Or even tongue-in-cheek... if it were an actual slam, I don't think it would have been written the same way.

3. That sounds sarcastic to me
Since everyone assumed Tim Robbins would say something controversial, and "lefty jerk" is a typical right-wing reaction to anything he says...

5. Uh....
I think the E!online wag was being sarcastic...pointing out that, rather than delivering a political rant, Robbins used his time at the podium to urge victims of abuse to seek help, thereby shutting up all the wingnuts who would rather see him shut up.

6. Now wait a minute here
Just because Robbins encouraged victims of abuse to "come forward and get help", that makes him a leftie jerk? What a bunch of B.S.! Last time anyone checked, this is still more or less a free country. Friggin' righties!

7. We should all proudly embrace the Leftie Liberal title!
It is time that we make the term "Right Wing" a four letter word! Which it truly is! Stand proud and point out that being a Left Liberal is someone who stands up for all Human Rights! It's a good thing!

Do you think that Tim Robbins really minds being called that? Even if it was serious and not a hee hee!

13. I haven't read E online in a long time
but back when I did, they were pretty heavy on the snark. I think it's very safe to say that this is sarcasm.

14. The relative who called the election for Bush was John Ellis - a cousin
As in John Ellis Bush (Jeb).

Was that guy really a relative!? I'm ill.

15. Billy Bush is indeed a relative
Edited on Mon Mar-01-04 11:26 AM by chimpy the poopthrow
of the pResident. And "airhead" is indeed an apt descripion. I try not to hold his family against him because, after all, Ron Reagan's not a bad guy. But Billy Bush is totally out of his element, and you know he just got the job because of his family. He's as dim as can be and has zero charisma.

P.S. I have to go with the majority here; I agree the comment was meant sarcastically.

16. nepotism knows know bound(arie)s
Canada's biggest private TV network, CTV, had one of our own right-wing dynasty there on the red carpet too -- Mulroney, can't even remember the twerp's first name now. Ben. Son of Brian, who ruined Canada and duetted "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" on stage with Ronnie.

Airhead about covers that one too. He's been assigned full-time duties at Canadian Idol these days. His sister married Lewis Lapham's son ... which doesn't speak well of the Laphams.

The lead post -- most definitely tongue in cheek.
(Not actually sarcasm. Dry humour. Takes a Canadian to get it.)

;^)

(That's a tongue in that cheek.)

19. I knew I didn't like him for a reason
and there it is! He had to be the most irritating "reporter" at the Oscars. Reminded me of a really bad game show host. Weird how those bush people get under my skin.
