WTF#%$%#$% L-1 Visa holder do not have to pay Income Tax
Edited on Fri Feb-27-04 08:53 PM by Florida_Geek
"Some companies, Buckwalter said, will actually do the work in places like India, while others will bring in foreign nationals on H-1 or L-1 visas, put them in a house, and have them do the work here. If they stay in the United States less than nine months of the year, they don't have to pay federal income taxes, although they and their employers do pay the Social Security tax"

1. That's strange . . .
I know that as long as anyone doesn't apply for citizenship, but continues to work her on a Visa, they are able to do this for up to 7 years. They can then return to their country for up to 6 months and then return on a working visa and the 7 years of no payment of income tax goes back into effect.

Of course, we can do the same in any other country. It applies in Canada (notice how many "Canadian" actors we have that do not change their citizenship . . . now you know why).

A lot of doctors do this too (that is how I learned about this 7 year policy for foreigners here that can stay here with working Visas. They are considered foreigners until they apply for citizenship. Until then, they pay no taxes.).

Also, first husband travels all over the world working for a computer company and has never paid any taxes in any country he has just worked in.

That's why if you are a citizen (born in the USA) you have "Taxation with Representation." WELL . . . we did until the 2000 election.

2. Yes...
and I fear it is going to get even worse.

I keep wondering what our country will do when the current binge of outsourcing reduces the wage scale significantly - to the point where tax revenues won't support the debt.

3. L-1 Visa have no caps on them
So a company could bring in 50 workers to do a job (outside of IT as well as IT) stack them in dorms pay them $5,000 per year, and fly them out of the country to Mexico every 9 months for a weekend.

L-1 start being abuse in the IT industry BUT will be hitting others.

Think of Repug States that would be willing to cross license with Indians or Russia nurses. They could flood the US market with cheap nurses.

4. Sure.
And teachers. And doctors. And security guards?

Bottom line, there are NO safe jobs. The only solution is a good decision in the voting booth...

5. My FEDEX driver said that they were using H1-B and L-1 workers
He's getting stressed out seeing it happen to where he works (new baby and all).

7. "Need" isn't the issue. Profit is the issue
This is apparently what Kucinich mentioned at UMass the other day -- under NAFTA/WTO, multi-nat corps being able to import (near-)slave labor to perform service jobs.

Vote for Kucinich, guys. He's the only one who's promised that his first act as President will be to flip the wake-up switch on these corporatocratic wet dreams.

9. Why does Mike Dell making 82 million per year ship out tech support?
Instead of employing people in Texas or other locations in the US he ships the tech support to India and other third World countries. All the while his average compensation over the last 5-6 years is about $$87 MILLION per year.

Why does any rational person in the US buy a fucking computer from that jerk????

10. well, he used (or uses) Texas prison labor as well
Many in TX (not enough by far) don't buy Dell because much of the stuff was made and sold by prisoners in the TX system.

I have no idea of current status of his labor force--where it is. But many I know here still won't think of Dell for purchasing.

8. See why Bush raids SS fund to make deficit look better?
Because he knows a certain percentage of that money doesn't have anyone attached to it. The more temporary workers the better. Millions if not billions paid in by people who will leave the country and never collect a penny of it. Thats money for Bush to start Wars with.
