What kind of action do translators see in the army?
Edited on Sun Feb-22-04 09:41 PM by m-jean03
A while ago, I found out that an old friend from high school had been hired as a civilian employee, translator, with the armed forces for his fluency in Arabic. I have tried to get in touch with his family but they've long ago moved out of town. I would love to be in touch with him as we were once quite close. Since I can't be, does anyone know if translators ever get quiet desk jobs or are they out on patrol with the soldiers? Hardly a day goes by I don't wonder how the heck he is doing and pray for his safety.

P.S. Can I post his name here in case anyone knows him?

1. Don't post his name... Depends on where he's assigned-
strategic, theater or tactical level.

Strategic basically guarantees a desk job.

Theater gets you a mix of the two.

Tactical? He'll be out with the grunts and even ahead of them many times.

Most of them are at tactical level right now.

4. This is a long shot but
every linguist/translator passes through Ft Huachuca, AZ. If I were as eager as you, I would write him a letter, photocopy it three times. Mail as follows

  1. his name
    B Co
    DLIFLC
    Presidio of Monterey, CA 93944-5006

  2. His name
    USAIC
    Fort Huachuca, AZ 85613

  3. His name
    111th MI Bde
    USAIC
    Fort Huachuca, AZ 85613

  4. Office of the Chief of Military Intelligence
    Attn: Career Manager for 97E & 98G
    Fort Huachuca, AZ 85613

When soldiers PCS from one assignment to another they leave a forwarding address to their next place... You might luck out. Especially with the Fort Huachuca addresses. The Office of the Chief Military Intelligence can find any MI soldier anywhere in the world and some kind soul might forward your letter. Make sure you enclose a note asking them to.

You could also contact the Chaplain of the 111th MI Brigade: http://usaic.hua.army.mil/111bde/Contact.htm He might be able to help. Sometimes doing people small favors brings you a bright note in the day and he might need just that!

Someone else may have a more efficient idea but that's the best I can do.

Peace

3. All of the above
Translators would be extremely busy doing things from translating intelligence, producing psyops material, to translating out in the field with the grunts. You can trust that he is definitely having the experience of his life.
