Teachers may sue if jobs cut

Published February 13, 2004

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Teachers Union said Thursday that it would consider taking legal action after the Board of Education declared it would have to cut 1,000 school-based positions to reduce its $200 million budget shortfall.

Though it is unclear exactly how many of the lost positions would be teaching posts, the union urged the Board of Education to trim administration jobs rather than faculty and staff.

"We have no intention of letting the Board of Education solve its budget woes on the backs of Chicago teachers or staff by starving Chicago's children of teachers and aides," said Deborah Lynch, union president.

Positions facing cutbacks could range from aides to janitors, Chicago Public Schools CEO Arne Duncan said.
