Subj: Colorado's financial picture askew?

http://rockymountainnews.com/

Republican strategist Karl Rove stunned a number of Coloradans Friday with his assessment of Colorado's economic situation.

In an interview with National Public Radio, Rove was asked about possible negative impacts of tax cuts on states.

"It's not every state in the union that's got big economic problems," Rove said.

"Take the state of Colorado, for example. Its finances are in good shape."

That's news to Mike Mauer, the nonpartisan chief economist for the Colorado legislature.

2. Is he insane?
What on earth is he talking about? We've had to cut over $1 BILLION in state budget in the last year, and looking at another this year. Our social services are decimated; state colleges are increasing tuition 25% to cover costs; K-12 would have been hammered but for a state amendment that guarantees our funding;

Rove is seriously out of touch.

7. Meanwhile next door in Kansas
We're around 800 million to 1 billion in debt that our former Repig Gov and the Repig State legislators ran up in his eight years. So...enter Democratic Gov Kathleen Sebilius as of last Nov. Of course taxes will have to go up on property and other things, there's also been talk of another sales tax hike.

The property tax hike isn't that big, sales tax hurts everyone but what the hell are you going to do? The Dem bashers are already beating up on Sebilius, guess they've already forgot who got us to this point.

10. My dad lives in KS
He likes Sebelius. But, you're right, she'll end up taking the fall for what has to be done to get them out of their mess.

11. Yeah--When Repig Owens took over there was a surplus
Edited on Thu Jan-29-04 01:53 PM by librechik
left over from 8 years of D-Roemer. The biggest argument in the leg was how to get rid of it. As soon as Repig Owens (how ironic) took over we started "owing." Now we have Deficits. Sound familiar?

Republicans are like this wherever they go. They hate "government" and want only to loot, rape and kill it. They don't understand that WE are the government, and that money is OURS, not the personla property of the Republican management.

15. That is the way repubes operate.. Smash & Grab
They never met a surplus that they didn't want to steal.. They are content to sit back and wait for the stockpile to grow, and then they will roar back and steal it again..

People are strange.. They cannot connect the dots.. They are easily swayed by lies and innuendo, and are always willing to open their wallets to the repubes, because they are suych "moral" family-loving people.

6. Economic Sanctions should be put on Karl Rove
One half can of Alpo per day. And a no fly zone restricting the media within 50 feet of the turd and no phone calls.

junior would sound like Cartman (South Park) or porky pig!

"GOPers GONE MAD!" The democrats at the DNC are talking about setting up first amendment zones now in the primaries, in case Bob Novak comes back for another drive by democrat mugging! They said we need voters who are not too battered to get out and vote! I'll bet Bob was after the guy's wallet!

17. Note from my Colo Legislator:
Representative Lois Tochtrop
Legislative Update

January 29, 2004

WE’RE BROKE!
Due to the TABOR Amendment, which limits not only government spending but also revenue intake, we have reached our revenue ceiling. Because of this, any bills for cash-funded projects will probably be killed this session. Cash funds must pass through the general fund before they can go into the programs for which they were meant.

The cash funds drive up the ceiling, forcing further cuts to the 2204-05 budget for programs we already fund, in particular, higher education, which has already taken serious cuts.

We are caught in a catch-22 and already have at least a $60 million dollar shortfall in this year’s budget. We’ll be forced to cut more programs to balance the 2004-05 budget. TABOR must be changed in order for government to do its job.
