George McGovern>>> Still contributing.
I worked for his election campaign while a member of the Young Democrats @ Shasta College in 1972. That is when & where I met John Kerry....... At any rate, McGovern has accepted the position that he is uniquely qualified for. An elder statesman, war heroe, with no visible dirty laundry. He has the credentials to openly question chimp's military record. Recognizing the moment, he has jumped into the fray. As long as he continues to talk about the AWOL issue, Dem canidates will not need to appear to be "taking the low road" (ie negative attack).

1. Indeed!
I've admired McGovern for years. It was my usually-conservative father who informed me that George McG was a decorated fighter pilot with a large number of "kills". Compare this to Dick Nixon, who, I believe, was a stateside military librarian during WWII.

A lot of people realize that they misjudged him 32 years ago. These are the same people who may seem "right wing" but who are just old-time patriotic Americans. And they see through Bush's lies, too.

BTW, Ernesto, as for your working for McGovern's campaign in 1972 ... thank you.

2. George McGovern.
He got my first vote in 1972. We that supported him knew he would lose, but it was the right thing. The inauguration in 1973 was a hard way to go. In 1974 reality changed. Our little band of malcontents swelled to an overwhelming majority.

Here is a good story about McGovern.

He was doing an interview on Austrian radio. He told how he had bombed a farm house there in WW2. After the attack one bomb had failed to fall. Not wanting to carry it back he maneuvered the plane to shake it lose. It fell on and destroyed the house. He said he always regretted it, not knowing if anyone had been killed or hurt.

The next caller said that it was his house and no one was hurt. He added that it was his proud sacrifice to rid the world of Nazis.

3. It is a sad irony...
that Republicans always speak so disparagingly of McGovern, when he has all the things they claim to value so highly. He was a genuine war hero and he has been married to the same woman for 60+ years. I always felt so bad that such a brilliant, kind, and decent man lost in such a big way to Nixon. It's another one of those "what ifs" that could have changed the course of history.
