Election 2000 count error question
Last week, just about 24 hrs before Kerry said get over it, I reread "Deadlock." It mentioned an incident in Volusia Cty, FL...

Briefly, Gore's vote count went backwards, which the local official said was impossible. The computer entered a negative-16,000 votes for Gore.

I'd completely forgotten about this, never did check it out. Was it ever explained? I mean plausibly.

... days ago on mass-punching of ballots. There was an article linked in that thread in which the author did a statistical analysis of punch-card overvotes compared to those from touchscreens or optical scan machines. Sorry, I don't have it at hand--it's bookmarked on another computer.

I think the Volusia County issues about vote totals were addressed in that thread and in that article.
