Assassination as Foreign Policy, Should the U.S. Kill Saddam Hussein?
snip
The Arab satellite station Al-Arabiya last night broadcast an audiotape said to be from Saddam Hussein.

On the tape, Saddam Hussein allegedly offered condolences to the Iraqi nation for the deaths of his sons. The voice said, "I mourn to you the deaths of Uday and Qusay and those who struggled with them. You are the honor of this nation. America will be defeated."

Meanwhile, the UN secretary general's special representative in Iraq Sergio Vieira de Mello called for Saddam to be captured alive. He said it was too easy an end for Saddam to be killed.

There have been numerous debates in the media over the release of the bloody and grisly photos of Uday and Qusay Hussein. But few have asked whether killing them was justified at all.

In the legal periodical Jurist, law professor Marjorie Cohn writes:

1. political assassination is bad policy
what goes around, comes around- I don't think US or any nation should practice assassination as foreign policy. Murder is wrong.

2. I've asked the question.
Assassination has never been official policy of the US. It probably isn't now, but they are using the war as a cover.

Assassination is murder, no matter how it is couched. It is especially heinous for the US to kill these people since they have not committed crimes or acts of war against the US.

If they are indeed criminals, as I have no doubt they are, they should be captured and tried by the people they committed those crimes against-- the Iraqis. We can sssist them in that capture, but killing them is simply murder.

Remember, this is the President-like object who bragged in the SOTU that we have assassinated terrorists. Has any other President or world leader made such a boast? Why was there so little outrage over that?

3. No!!!
At least not if he comes out with his hands up. Now if he or anyone with him fires at our boys, you bet. Not a single GI life is worth trying to take that SOB alive.

4. Heres my problem
like with OBL the kidney patient, do we know if he is dead or alive? Do we know if alive where he(they) are. It would seem to me that in least track OBL nail him would be much easier if alive he needs dialysis.

Between the contradictions and all the war machismo in reporting I have not a clue is SH remains among us or not. Assassination policies are nothing new. Look at the black ops at play during the Bay of Pigs.
