10. 'Picard maneuver' is what picard did when...
he wanted the viewscreen cut offespecially in the middle of the other guy talking. Its a hand slash across the throat.

He disguised it a little to be a neck scratch (looks similiar)

48. Not to get all Trekgeeky on you, but...
Edited on Wed Jan-21-04 03:03 AM by Michael Harrington
The Picard Maneuver was the ironic term used for the thing that Stewart did when he got up out of the Captain's chair, walked forward and tugged downward once, very vigorously, on his tunic to straighten it out.

I've seen him do that "cut him off" gesture you describe, but I don't believe it was ever called that.

19. BAD MOVE!!!!

This was a bad move on Kennedy's part. He was being defensive. A stoic silence and confidence would have been far more effective. Sit there and keep your dignity. Show the audience that this idiot can't get under your skin.

Kennedy acted childish. He looked like the people sitting to the right or let on Jerry Springer.

Rangle looked like he was either asleep or had a heart attack ;-)

54. You do it

You're polite for the sense of self dignity. At the very least, you do it so people won't show clips of you acting like a guest on Jerry Springer.

People who have confidence don't act defensive. This shows.

I'm sorry if I'm not a group thinker. I straddle the fence. If anything you should appreciate that I largely hate Republicans but have some insight as to why they are so successfull.

I'm sure that most liberals yelled Hurrah when Kennedy shook his head. But people on the right and center likely saw this as a sign of weekness.

The looks of boredom that I saw on the face of the military personnell were by far the most effective. It shows a sense that Bush's words are not important.

Next time, I suggest that the Democrats sit silently, refuse to applause (except on introduction of "The President of the United States" you must ALWAYS respect the office). They should look at their watches alot. Scribbling notes would be effective. Reading a book might be effective as well. Talking on a cell phone would ROCK!!!!! ;-)

No arm crossing. That just looks bad. Keep a relaxed natural posture. No head shaking. Your showing that Bush is getting to you. Cetainly don't make a "throat slashing" gesture. No clapping. Booing is appropriate if he says something VERY stupid.

57. During the SOTU

During the state of the Union, you can't exactly get up and make your own speach.

Yes, Democrats have layed down like dogs and have gotten steamrolled. It's crappy policy. But that's something you do BETWEEN SOTU addresses.

During an address, you have to show courtesy, dignity and confidence. Confident people don't shake their heads like that. It's a powerless reaction. Confident people save their reaction for when they can do something about it.

I'm not saying that Kennedy isn't confident. He just didn't LOOK confident.

No, I am NOT a freeper. I loathe and despise Bush. But I refuse to group myself into a side and throw mud on the other team simply because their the other team. Likewise, I won't praise my side when they perform POORLY.

Kennedy has been around long enough to realize that that camera is panning around the audience. He should know by now that his side will like what he does not matter what. It is the people in the middle that see these reactions that will change opinion.

In my opinion, the Democrats performed VERY poorly at this SOTU. It would be a complete disaster if Bush wasn't 100% full of hot air, distractions and lies. Now it's up to the Deans, Kerry's and Clarks to get in Bush's smug little smirking face about his horse shit. The congressional delegation dropped the ball.

Well, maybe expect Rangel. The sleeping was certainly different and showed a profound indifference for Bush's empty words.

the whole thing, hook, line and sinker. He had more courage to do that; to let the cameras show exactly what his views are on Bush's lying...

it's those people who don't want to upset the "decorum" that have allowed this president to go off half cocked to the point that he is comfortable and arrogant beyond belief in delivering a speech of the calibre he delivered tonight.

IF Clinton had delivered that speech, you can bet the refuqulicans would be acting like they were up for Oscars.

Bully for Kennedy!

55. NO GREAT MOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! get your act
outta here! everyone knows that when nice, groveling, smiling Daschle was in the limelight, the Bush/Rove/Delay/Gingrich/Cheny/Rumsfeld/Hyde monster had their way. When someone like Dean is coming out swinging and it motivates the Democratic base, the others get the idea that maybe we need to challenge this perversion of the office of president and call his selfish, negative policies what they are.

I'm proud of Ed Kennedy and his response. I think more people should get out there and mouth off and tell these MAJOR LEAGUE ASSHOLES WHAT AMERICA THINKS!!! BOOOYAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only possible move. What else could he do. He reacted. I would been doing the "Puke maneuver" (Mime sticking finger down throat and gagging). The ridiculous spin requires this reaction at a minimum. I am very pleased to have Teddy Kennedy as an elder statesman in my party. I was very pleased to see him not sitting there pretending to be happy with what was being said.

32. Go Ted!
At least one person in attendance was not afraid to display an honest reaction. What party does he belong to again? I kept flipping channels until I found the one giving him the most camera time - NBC, I think. I also thought it was awesome how they led off with John Kerry, even before the Democratic response. Asked if he agreed with the Resident's assessment of the Iraq situation, Kerry said, "No." He must belong to the same party as Kennedy.

George Bush lies incessantly and his policies are immoral, and I'm having serious trouble respecting anyone who won't say so.
