Gay Activists Responsible If Same-Sex Marriage Becomes Election Issue GOP
http://www.365gay.com/newscon04/01/011904GOPgay.htm

The chairman of the Republican National Committee says that if gay marriage becomes a divisive issue in the presidential election it will be the fault of the gay community itself.

"If gay activists try to take the Massachusetts court ruling and nationalize the government sanction of gay marriage, I suspect it will be an issue," Ed Gillespie told ABC on Sunday.

Gillespie acknowledged that the GOP is under pressure by conservatives within the party for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

what a fucking idiot

3. Yes, that's right. Gay activists are behind the Federal Marriage Amendment
Uh-huh, sure.

One of the most idiotic statements I ever read. Of course, it came from a Republican.

5. No, actually, it will be the GOP
bringing it up over and over again, not actually the issue itself, but just playing into many Americans' ingrained fear of homosexuals, in the hopes that they will ignroe things like civil rights, bad Iraq war, and so on, and vote for pro-choice, anti-gay candidates.

This is not to say that gay marriage is a peripheral, unimportant issue, because it's not. But, the sad fact is, most Americans, who would otherwise agree that the rich are getting richer, and that corporations are corrupt, that Americans need health care, etc., will get turned off from the Democratic candidate simply because the Repbulicans will scream about "baby-killers!" and "he wants to degrade marriage!"

6. Oh! If you stand up and demand your rights entitled to you under the
Constitution, then whatever happens is your fault.

Please spare me your bullshit!!!!

7. Notice how the Busheviks are never to blame for ANYTHING?
Funny, that.

I guess Max Cleland was responsible for that disgraceful ad in which he was compared to bin Laden.

8. Switch the words "gay marriage"
for "school desegregation" and "gay activists" for "black activists"...or "women's suffrage" and "feminist activists." So if women's suffrage becomes a divisive issue, it's all the fault of the feminist activists.

The more things change...the less the reactionaries' arguments change...

That is so true... their arguments have never changed and they have never stopped thumping their bible to try to "prove" themselves right!

9. GOP Threat: "You Uppity Gays & Lesbians Had Better Watch Out"!
Wow! What seething, open hatred that the Republican Party now propagates!

Want to know what's more pathetic? Over one million "out of the closet" homosexuals voted for George W. Bush"...and probably will again.

Go figure!

10. This is ludicrous.
I got a newsflash here.

EVERY SINGLE TIME the subject of dabating gay rights come up, it's because the Repugs and the Religious Reich brought it up. Gay people, at 10% or less of the whole population, do not have the numbers, organization, money, or media access to get any message accross. The only thing we can do is fight back when the Right opens fire. These debates are always defined by the terms of the anti-gay knuckledraggers who, regular as clockwork, bring it up as their big wedge issue during, Suprise!, Presidential elections. Gay marriage this time around is no different. None of us brought it up. It was brought up by those that want to ratify this insipid Constitutional amendment, that has been languishing in committee for the last 2 years.

12. Typical - Blame the straw man.
Completely unsurprising; nothing is below these thugs, and Gillespie is the worst of the lot.

What burns me is the number of Americans willing to swallow this swill.

"Gay activists." I'm surprised he didn't say "homosexual militants."

15. Bush* Is Making Mention Of This In The SOTU Speech...
He's going to be calling for a constitutional ammendment, I believe. Or at the very least mentioning his support of continued discrimination of Queer Americans.

The little fucker.

19. Good! I hope he does!
Bring all the hate right out into the open! Get it on the table! Make it an issue of national debate, around the water coolers instead of leaving it in the back pages of the editorial section.

The attention given FMA on DU is, IMNSHO, completely out of proportion with that given it by the rest of the country. We talk about it because we're news junkies. We hear about it because we post items from PlanetOut.com, and 365gay.com, and a hundred other sources that mean nothing to most Americans.

A while back, some queer DUer said s/he was waiting for some right-wing official to just come out and say, "No, we DON'T want you here. YES, we would be HAPPY if you left the country."

If * would even come close to something like that in the SOTU, then he'll have made the RW's desire to "codify" our second-class status clear to everyone.

So, Georgie Boy, to paraphrase your own words: BRING IT ON.

16. How many bona fide gay activists do you know?
Granted I'm one. I don't march in gay parades, but I haunt the web, I've done a lot of background work in the gay marriage thing and I've done a lot of political face time. I know seven or eight other bona fide activists.

The majority of my gay friends aren't activists. Sure they'll sign a petition or two, but they don't do the get your hands dirty down the trenches stuff. And there's thousands and thousands of other gay people in town and in the city who I never see.

The RRR's make it sound like there's a gay activist on every street corner trying to overthrow the government and ban churches.

It just ain't so.

Good work. Make 'em think other wise. Good bluff! By the way the secret coded message from HQ (Head Queen) will be broadcast at 1:07 am eastern time. The same channel as last week. Tonights code is: "The goose flies at dawn."
