Widespread American antipathy toward Saudi Arabia
It cuts across political lines. Listening to the Saudi indignation tonight, I realize that Americans largely don't buy it. Even among conservatives there is much deep distrust toward the Saudis.
Yet G.W. Bush doesn't get it. I just hope it doesn't take a Lieberman to hammer them in 2004 on this issue. It's a weakness in Bush's base and it's begging for a wedge.

1. dislike of the house of Saud is pretty global

Westerners dislike them because they see them as fundamentalists

Easterners dislike them because they are dollahos and collaborate with Israel

Fundamentalists dislike them because they put on a pious image but have decadent lifestyles, are dollahos and collaborate with Israel

bushregime loyalists believe that this will make it easier to get support for seizing their oil

The house of saud is teetering, and it should fall, but the likelihood that the bushregime would allow the arabian people to choose their own gov is about as likely as any population in the ME choosing a gov that could be counted on to put US financial interests ahead of the wellbeing of its people.

For that you need sleazy dollahos.

It is also unlikely that a bushregime invasion and asset seizure of arabia would enjoy a great deal of popularity with either the arabian people or the region as a whole.

5. The more we talk about the Saudis, the less we talk about Bush
and his own failures leading up to and including 9/11.

This is why Bush refused to declassify the 9/11 report, so that we keep on talking about anything other than him.

6. Forget about any invasion of Saudi Arabia
It's big, it has a very long coastline, and occupying Mecca and Medina would not go over very well in the Muslim world. Who would occupy it? Besides, the Bushes and the Saudis are bed partners who kiss and don't tell. The Saudis are sacred cows.

I hope I don't seem idiotic for posting this, but to me it's rather obvious.
