Gephardt's On CNN
I don't know why he gets trashed on this board

On economic issues he's the true heir to FDR, Harry Truman, and LBJ

2. I agree but
there are two reasons he gets trashed. Primarily, it's the war vote. But he also has changed his position on so many issues over the years that he invites attack.

But as of now, I think he has a good a chance of winning the nomination as anyone. In fact, I think it may come down to a Dean-Gephardt shootout.

6. it wasn't really his war vote itself
It was the fact that he undercut Daschle and the rest of the Dems chumming up to Bush.

A leader just doesn't undercut his allies like that.

Plus, I got the impression his war support was purely political. In Lieberman's case, at least, I think he actually was pro-war.

8. Didn't Daschle And Tim Johnson
Edited on Tue Jul-29-03 08:15 PM by DemocratSinceBirth
support the war

Their political viability in South Dakota depended on it.

Tim Johnson didn't have any votes to spare.

Karl Rove and his puppet orchestrated the war for many reasons but among them was to distract people from their domestic woes and also to put Dems in a tight spot.

3. His voting record this time around perhaps?
missed the vote on trashing OT pay. (he has the AFL-CIO's endorsement?)

missed a winning vote to save headstart.

That was just last week's doozie.

He was busy campaigning for president.

I am not buying the argument that "we would have lost anyways cause the republicans are playing a numbers game so the repubes can have as many republicans vote as they need on a BAD bill and the others vote the "good cop" vote but if a dem shows up to vote to tip it, the "good cop" changes his vote to make the bad bill go through."

There is some value in making every single republican we can vote for the evil bills.......it's like a campaign poster to show what their voting record is and how bad it is for the people.

In addition, it would be VERY good for the democratic party to have the dems vote in a block all the way down the line. And show the voters that the dems are standing with the people. And to show that the republicans are just yes-men for Bush.

Yes, his non-votes absolutely count against him. For so many reasons.

9. Gephardt's OK
I have no serious objection to him, with the possible exception of the Bush Rose Garden Iraq Resolution hugs and kisses.
