Poll shows backlash on gay issues
From today's paper:
http://usatoday.com/news/washington/2003-07-28-poll_x.htm

By Susan Page, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — Americans have become significantly less accepting of homosexuality since a Supreme Court decision that was hailed as clearing the way for new gay civil rights, a USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup Poll has found. After several years of growing tolerance, the survey shows a return to a level of more traditional attitudes last seen in the mid-1990s.

This is so frustrating. One day people are bashing a gay school in NYC, another day, the Pope is bashing gay marriage, and every day, Robertson, Falwell, the Traditional Family Coalition, Phelps and all the other christian hate mongers spend every second of the day trying to make hard working, decent people's lives miserable. How mean and hateful. And people wonder why I have trouble dealing with religion. :grr:

1. It also has to do with the mentality...
Of our Government. Under Reagan/Bush terrible, Under Clinton tolerance, Under W down right sadistic! I think the back lash from the Supreme Court ruling has a lot to do with the likes of the Santorums in Congress.

3. It's going to go back and forth
If you are gay, get involved in your local community, be proudly gay and show by example that gay people are nothing to be afraid of. How about the first gay soup kitchen? Invite Falwell and Robertson.

4. That was in today's Arizona Republic........
I was amazed to find that the Black support had only been 58% and it went down to 36%. I always thought that the strongest support for Gay rights came from the black community. I thought that those who had suffered from hate and discrimination such as the Blacks and Jews would be more tolerant of homosexuals. If the poll is accurate, I was sadly mistaken. So what now? Will the black community run emass to the republican side of the fence, so they won't be accused of supporting those sinful, degenerate, perverts. Should I stop given my support to the blacks? I was all for having a black or women president. Now I'll just support the cause of White Women getting the Oval Office. If that is the way they think of me, why should I lift a finger to help them?

I want to hear from Black DUer telling me the poll was skewered and that Blacks really do support Gay Rights. And prove it.

5. It is disappointing because
you would think most African Americans could/would empathize. I've even had one black friend say to me (I'm white), "...well, at least you can go into a store and not have security follow you, and at least you can go rent an apartment without being turned down because I can't hide my minority characteristic." Interesting.

8. What t he black man doesn't realize............
is that most straights don't really know if a person is gay or not, they just assume and discriminate from there. So there are straights that are mistaken for Gays and get the same bum's rush as Gays. Just because the black man can't hide his blackness doen't mean all Gays can hide their Gayness and some who aren't Gay, but appear Gay are just as much discriminate as if they really were gay. Blacks shouldn't assume that the hatred toward them is somehow unique.

"Queer Eye" Sees Ratings
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=797&ncid=799&e=3&u=/eo/20030729/en_tv_eo/12231

The fashion and culture mavens of cable's Queer Eye for the Straight Guy successfully crossed over to broadcast TV, helping NBC to big wins for the ratings week ended Sunday.

The Peacock dominated as both the most watched network, averaging 7.7 million viewers, and the most watched network among demographically desirable 18-to-49-year-olds.

Queer Eye did its part, with the makeover show bringing in 6.9 million customers in its prime-time debut in the 9:30 p.m., Thursday time slot after Will & Grace (22nd place, 7.9 million viewers).

12. Well...
...it was kind of a rhetorical question, but thanks.

All polls are skewed. And worthless.

10. It doesn't make sense
More folks support gay rights until there is a ruling in favor of gay rights which would cause folks to oppose gay rights?

11. This volatility is pretty remarkable.
The swings in numbers over the course of just a few months is really worth commenting on.

I dont think I've ever seen swings like that....

13. Don't try to make sense of rednecks' bigotry
it will cause any thinking man a headache.

Rednecks hate because they fear.
They are scared little white people afraid of everything and everyone that isn't just as fucked up as they are.

Blacks.
Gays.
Pot smokers.
Democrats.

It's fear from cowards, plain and simple.

14. I'm not so sure it's a case of fear
(although that's part of it) as much as it's a case of being (a) ignorant and (b) brainwashed about everything in the bible. Whenever I pin someone into a corner during a discussion/debate about how being gay IS NOT a choice, etc., inevitably I hear, "....yea, but the bible..." Bible schmible, with all due respect.
