Twelve years ago, in my first job as a reporter, I witnessed a real election catastrophe.
Voters rejected Republicans at every level of government. The incumbent president got 37 percent of the vote. The party held just 40 percent of seats in Congress.
Here, Republicans lost every statewide race but one and were not close to controlling the state House or Senate.
When it was over, I called a local GOP legislator to ask about his morale. What choice did he have now but to go along with the ruling party?
He was defiant. The war starts now, he said. Democrats run it all, so there's nothing for Republicans to do but fight.
I tell this story because downtrodden Democrats who worked to defeat President Bush this year are wondering: What do they do now?
The answer is: Do what the Republicans did. You fight
