'All US tech jobs will move out in a decade'
http://inhome.rediff.com/money/2004/aug/26bpo.htm
August 26, 2004 12:04 IST

Every technology-related job in the United States would be moved to overseas destinations within a decade as relocation of jobs to countries like India would enable firms to cut costs, a top American businesswomen has said.

"That is a scary concept," Kathy Brittain White, who was named the Forbes Top 25 American Businesswomen in 2001, said.

"If something is not done in 10 years, every technology job will be overseas," White, a former CIO of Cardinal Health Inc, said on Wednesday.

The global market for outsourcing will grow at an annual rate of 7 per cent to hit $1.2 trillion by 2007. By relocating work from Europe and the United States to countries such as India, global firms are cutting costs by up to 40 per cent, she said.

1. global firms are cutting costs by up to 40 per cent,
Everybody get ready for your McJob... and you can cash it at the McBank..... this is NOT photoshopped... I took this the other day... and clipped out the surrounding areas to protect the innocent. I have a 2 year degree in networking... attended a big fancy tech school... heavily influenced by (under the thumb of) Microsoft I would imagine... purchased very expensive Microsoft books... got a 3.9 average.

Make a long story short... I am working (just got a hitch) with a temp agency... changed out several hundred fluorescent bulbs last night... standing on the top rungs of a step ladder... yeah... I'm better off than I was 4 years ago.... I don't actually go to this bank.... but I do drive by it every now and then...... maybe this is why I like Lou Dobb's series on the exporting of America......

4. McBank
LOL! Thanks for the laugh.

I have a 4-year degree in CS from another big fancy tech school. I worked lots and lots to get my 4.0GPA, and a degree that is now completely worthless.
I'm considering retraining through my county's workforce development program. But then again, maybe I shouldn't even bother with any more training since all the good jobs are flooding out of the US.
However, there's a Target and a few pizza places right down the street from me. McJob world, here I come...

7. You mean you have not retrained for the hamburger
manufacturing engineering degree yet?At least you can be sure that wouldn't be outsourced because the Indians worship cows.

2. Democrats have missed the boat on this issue.
It's the biggest issue of the new century.

If we don't start becoming 'protectionist', it's going to be a race to the bottom to see how fast we can slide down into third world nation status.

10. Yes! This is huge!
The elimination of the middle class is a wake up call that should be blasted into the skulls of everyone by the dems. Instead, they want to "enforce" the rules of NAFTA or whatever. These trade policies are clearly designed commoditize labor as quickly as possible. I read the statements on the NDOL website and they support free trade policies. The DLC is insidious and I think they are a major reason this isn't being brought up...

3. Not every tech job
A bit over the top here but the sentiment is correct...

I'd say that every significant software project that can be sent offshore will be sent offshore. Most are already. The wage differences are hugh to say the least.

In addition to software development, I'm seeing a significant amount of system and network admin work moving off. Basically if you don;t have to be there, you won't be, and odds are these workers will be outside the US.

6. Basically if you don;t have to be there
A thought.... apply for a job with an Indian firm (that has contracts for work that used to be done here)... they may be able to trouble shoot OS's, networking and so forth... but they can't magically change a net card, MB, or anything else physical for that matter.... by remote control.

8. I have read here at DU that many research jobs in the drug
industry, including clinical trials are being moved to India by companies like Pfizer,Eli Lilly and Bristol Myers. Also institutional research by Merrill Lynch,J.P.Morgan Chase and other Wall Street firms are also going to India.Legal and Accounting work is already being outsourced.

Can you tell me what is going to be left?

9. I work for a high tech company
They've been laying off quarterly since about March 2002. We're very short-handed and the other day at a meeting someone asked a VP if we would start hiring soon. The reply was that they are replacing people - only not in the US - the replacements are being hired in China and India.
