Drones will replace troops
from Defense Tech

President Bush's plan to drastically scale back the number of U.S. troops in Asia And Europe may come as a surprise to many. But at the Defense Department's labs and research centers, they've seen this coming for a long time.

That's why the Pentagon has been working on a series of weapons that would allow America's military to fight a battle overseas -- while keeping our forces based, for the most part, here at home.

Hypersonic missiles, with ranges over 3,000 miles, could strike at targets a continent away. Killer drones, deployed from aircraft carriers, could penetrate deep into enemy territory. Giant blimps could haul troops and equipment directly to the battlezone – without the need for billion-dollar airfields or deep-water ports.

4. The mention of drones made me think Freepers were gonna enlist
Then I remembered they are even more gutless than Nazis, and would shit themselves if they got near a combat zone.

7. Drones kill
They don't discriminate between civilian and soldier,
can't make arrests and don't do compassion on the
ground...
Sounds like Rummy

9. Here's an idea..
.... how about replacing gun powder based weaponry with the humble bow, arrow, spear and sword?
at least less will be killed.

11. Damn it's good to be
da King I guess.

We invade a country because we think that they might one day sometime in the future have a killer drone that could make it's way over here.

And then we turn around and design plans for a killer drone...that...could...make...it's...way........to...another..........country.......thousands.........of............miles........away.(sigh)

And that would leave trained military troops with no war to fight to do what then? Peel a potato or two?

Where's that Earth killing asteroid? Obviously we're going to kill each other slowly, might as well go out with a bang. Giant blimps, killer drones, it's enough. I can't take it.

12. This fantasy is being propounded by the same people
who thought it was possible to occupy Iraq and steal its oil with as few as 40,000 troops. These idiots do not seem to realize that wars are usually won by taking over your opponents territory. This requires an infantry force on the ground. Of course, Rumsfeld has the same sort of world view as a lot of American CEOs who seem to think that they can control the globe without actually employing anyone. These people have lost contact with reality and have made the fatal mistake of believing their own propaganda.

13. Right. Giant blimps. Big fat slow-moving targets. Easily destroyed ...
... by windshear. World war one technology. Another multibillion dollar boondoggle.
