The Pope is calling for "unity" against Marriage Equality...*sigh*
Pope Benedict XVI called for Christians to unite behind the idea that marriage is between one man and one woman during a visit to Germany. He described the Catholic Church's beliefs as facing a number of threats, and he included same-sex marriage on the list.

"Knowing, too, the value of family and marriage, we as Christians attach great importance to defending the integrity and the uniqueness of marriage between one man and one woman from any kind of misinterpretation," he said, according to the Associated Press. "Here the common engagement of Christians, including many Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox Christians, makes a valuable contribution to building up a society equipped for the future."

The pope appears to be interested in uniting faiths behind some commonalities in belief. He even visited the monastery where Martin Luther, who split devotees away from the church, once studied. Then the pope met with Muslim leaders and suggested that marriage might be among those areas where their religious interests are in common.

“I am thinking, for example, of the protection of the family based in marriage, respect for life in every phase of its natural course or the promotion of greater social justice,” he listed for the leaders, according to the New York Times.

1. Yo, Benedict - give marriage a chance and THEN you'll be qualified to speak on the matter.

2. The Pope, eh?
Feh! Just another crusty old priest, unmarried and unfamiliar with the concept. Why anyone pays attention to him, I do not understand. 16th Century concepts just seem a little outdated to me...just a little.

6. Well then, when Obama expresses the exact same religious
objection to equal marriage rights, rather than gloss over that, you should use language like you do about other leaders who believe such things and spread them to the public, otherwise it is rather hollow. Tell him, in writing, that you support him in spite of his 16th century thinking, tell him it seems outdated, use an emoticon, whatever, but tell the man, in strong words like you use for other religious people, words like 'crusty', that you do not agree with his position or with the religious framing of that position.
This is what I ask of all the strong 'supporters'. Give your support, but tell the President that it is in spite of his opposition to marriage equality, not because of it. Those who are silent are counted as opponents of equality. Silence = Death. Knowledge = Life.

14. I find his anti-gay views surprising since he looks like a schizophrenic drag queen
Gold dresses, ruby slippers, and silly hats that would make Aretha Franklin blush... sounds like a case of Ted Haggard-itis to me.

5. "respect for life in every phase of its natural course"
Edited on Mon Sep-26-11 09:16 AM by peacetalksforall
The reality is in this country is that some are obsessed about the fetus, then happy and proud when the child chooses a lifetime career in war. And few know or care about modifying the genes of natural food for profit even causing farmers to commit suicide. And on and on. Then when older, some want them dead prematurely if they don't have insurance. And then there are the unfed with no homes. Respect for life?

I'm not into smearing the Pope, I'm into pointing out some hypocrisies in the way things are believed and worded and (not) thought through.

7. Um..
The Popester and the Catholic church have been oppressing women for centuries by denying them control of their reproductive lives, so why would anyone think there would be any kind of progressive sea change on gay issues, coming from the general direction of the Vatican? Come on!

10. The Pope and the Church Have NEVER Favored Any Kind of Socially Imposed "Equality"
Edited on Mon Sep-26-11 09:59 AM by Demeter
because that would be violating "God's will."

When anything bad can be attributed to "God's will", then anything goes...

it's a vile and implacable weapon against social change programs that would alter the status quo and the "Might Makes Right" theology.

12. Why does anybody take marriage advice from people who have never
been married, and surrounds themselves from people who've never been married.

17. I agree, donheld........
people usually only take advice from someone who is experienced in said field...............
obviously that old man in Rome is NOT experienced in said particular field.......is he?
Wears golden robes, funny hats, ruby shoes, and surrounds himself with others in varying
funny and unnecessary regalia. Yep, just the one to know all about marriage!

15. FU Pope
Apparently he supports child molesters. How come that religion is still around anyway. I was raised catholic, and regret that decision made by my parents. Religion is child abuse.
