Lovely County Citizen

Troy Anthony Davis ... was in a parking lot near a Burger King in Savannah one hot summer night in 1989. A fight broke out among some men, and a police officer, Mark MacPhail, moonlighting as a security guard (at a Burger King!) stepped in to break it up.

As can happen when men have had it up to here with each other, a gun came out and MacPhail was shot in the head and the heart. The fighting men quickly dispersed.

Several days later one of the men in the fight decided the police were his best pals, so he went to them and said, "Troy Davis shot your guy." Davis was promptly arrested, tried, convicted and sentenced to death by lethal injection ...

We don't know what it must be like to be a black man in Georgia in the heat of summer when a fight breaks out and the one who tries to stop it is killed. Because MacPhail was white (an issue never overlooked by anyone) and didn't show up at home after work, a modern day, improper, herd mentality lynching took place ...
