Putting Rage Against Pedophiles Before Our Children's Safety
I hear this all the time: "Child molesters can't be cured." It's repeated so often that it's almost taken as gospel these days. But there's actually no consensus about whether people who have committed sex crimes are, in fact, lost causes. A study by the American Psychiatric Association concluded that "although treatment does not eliminate sexual crime, research supports the view that treatment can decrease sex offense and protect potential victims."

2. One of the problems with the law
is that they don't distinguish between true pedophiles and those who are caught in an over zealous criminal system. Many so called pedophiles are young people who had sex with a partner that was under age. Also some pedophiles are people who have been accused, but may not be guilty, and took a plea bargain, for what ever reason.

So, when they say pedophiles can't be cured, it may not be true with regards to how the law 'catches' these people.

3. I have a friend on the registry
for having sex with his girlfriend when he was 18 and she was 15.

They're now married, with 2 kids, have been married for 5 years.

But he's still on the registry, has to report every 6 months, and most places won't hire him because of his felony.

Its an injustice, but most people when they find out he's on the registry treat him like a leper, even though he's a really great guy.

The law is unfair, and people are too.

4. Yes, it very unfair for them to be put in this position
Because it doesn't just affect him but it also affects his wife. I understand that the law was created for all the right reasons, but when it entangles good people in the snare, it's no longer the right reason.

6. Lump 'em all together
Some were photographers who took pictures of their kids in the bathtub.
Some were drunks who peed near a playground where children were playing.
Some were teachers who handed out bad grades.
Some were looking for sexual gratification with children.
Some bought a used computer and took it to the shop for an upgrade.

What did they all have in common? They were an easy prosecution for an assistant D.A. looking to advance his career.

5. that's a little slippery, moving from ''child molesters'' to sex offenders in general being
effectively treated.

Some child molesters are motivated like rapists, and just see kids as the easiest targets.

For others, it is more like a sexual orientation.

The first could possibly be reformed but the latter should be institutionalized for the rest of their lives.
