Capitalizing diversity
State must overcome wealth disparities to foster entrepreneurship
Among the many thought provoking findings emerging from the 2010 census, perhaps the most important highlights the changing face of Mississippi.
According to the census, while the total population of Mississippi is 58 percent white and 42 percent minority, the demographics for our children paint a very different picture. In 2010, there were 374,041 white children living in Mississippi and 381,514 black, Hispanic or Latino, Asian or other children.
For the first time since the census began, white children in Mississippi are in the minority.
Additionally, the birth rates for minority groups were higher than they were for Mississippi's white residents.
