UK to "name and shame" failing defence projects

Reuters) - The defence ministry on Monday said it will "name and shame" defence projects that run late or over-budget, in an effort to bring market and public pressure to bear on underperforming defence firms.

Parliament's spending watchdog and others have often excoriated the defence ministry over delayed and expensive projects critics say were poorly planned or had little oversight after they were started.

The coalition government has pledged to virtually eliminate a budget deficit that had topped 10 percent of national output by 2015, and government departments are under pressure to reduce costs.

"I want to send a clear message across defence: reckless spending stops here. Too often there has been too much reliance on industry's self reporting of time delays and capability deficits," Defence Secretary Liam Fox said in a statement.
