Winning the Future starts with our children
At the State of the Union speech in January, President Obama outlined his concept of Winning the Future. It was a discussion of investment in research and technology, of education and innovation, a plan to once again establish our nation as a global leader in something other than wars waged.

That future hinges on our children, and our children are under constant attack.

In a society that has become more diverse than ever, we have also become more divisive than ever, more judgmental than ever, and nobody feels this more than our kids.

Kids today see people on TV or on the internet that are like them more than ever. Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, Transgender, "alternative" in some variety, all living free to be who they are and encouraging others to do the same.

But, like most areas of life, what you see on TV and what you get in the real world are two totally different things. These "alternative" kids have joined the traditional outcasts, the poor, the overweight, and the "nerd" in a constant state of being bullied.

With the advent of the social networks, the bullying goes beyond the classroom. MySpace, Facebook and Twitter have become homes not just for people looking to connect and share, but for people looking to belittle and demean so they can feel better about themselves and their insecurities.

For too many kids, it is simply overwhelming, and they decide life is no longer worth the pain.

The It Gets Better Project is trying to do what they can to help.

We all know that conservatives, specifically fundamental conservatives, have little sympathy for the "alternative" lifestyles, deeming them to be an abomination before their supposedly merciful god. So, these organizations depend on progressives to join the cause and to get the message out to others.

Now it's your turn...... http://nothingright.com/archives/974
