Ahmed Rashid: Osama's death: What next for al-Qaeda?
Osama's death: What next for al-Qaeda?
2 May 2011 Last updated at 05:14 ET

The killing of al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden is a huge blow to the organisation but as guest columnist Ahmed Rashid reports, its decentralised nature means it has the potential to carry out attacks on any number of targets.

There have been cheers and jubilation in the US and elsewhere in the West, but capital cities around the world are already bracing for the repercussions of Bin Laden's killing.

Hundreds of dedicated and would-be jihadis will be mourning and swearing to give their lives in revenge for his death at the hands of a joint US-Pakistani special forces team in the city of Abbotabad.

There is little doubt that the death of Bin Laden is a huge blow to al-Qaeda.

1. They already were giving their lives for the CAUSE. Just what is that
cause -- the death of innocent people as well as themselves? Osama was good at getting others to die for him. Too bad his own death won't stop the carnage.

2. This will change little.
The U.S., the terrorist organizations and all involved will find reasons to keep killing each other.

3. It may be that the new nationalist movements
breaking out all over the region will give young people a better option. I hope so.
