Hear the Thunder

By Janine Turner

Published January 07, 2011

Did you hear the thunder yesterday? It was a distinctly American thunder. It was loud and proud and powerful. It was our founding fathers clapping from heaven as our representatives in the United States House read the United States Constitution. It was the first time the Constitution had been read aloud in Congress.

History was made and yet, it is astonishing to reflect upon the fact that it has taken 224 years to recite such an important document that is the heartbeat of our Republic.

The Constitution is a national treasure whose glitter gleans the pathway and construct of our national pursuits, laws and way of governing. All that glitters is not gold, however, and thrown into the pearls of wisdom were stones that had to be refined and amended. The brilliance of our Constitutional forefathers, who believed in the genius of the people, was that they left ways to refine these rocks creating the cement that binds the clauses we so readily reference today.

As the House members solemnly rose and strode to the podium to recite their portion of the Constitution, a national moment, a Patriot’s pause pulsed through America. -- Perched upon the clouds above us were Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and George Washington whose sighs of relief blew whispers of encouragement.

The silence was broken only by the gavel of the presiding officer calling order to the House because a heckler was harassing members during a moment of reverence.

Many who disapproved of the reading of the Constitution parlayed this singular outburst on the floor into a collective Conservative, Tea Party comment on President Obama’s citizenship. The outcry, “Except Obama,” occurred during the reading Article 11, Section 1, paragraph 5 which states that no person but a natural born citizen shall be eligible to be president of the United States.

This opportunistic twist, by the liberal elite, of a non-event is nonsense. Firstly, one person’s perspective does not quantify the Republican or Tea Party stance. Secondly, this historic moment of reading the Constitution was not about President Obama or any President, for that matter. It was about the United States, the citizens of the United States and the preservation of our Republic. A President’s four or eight year term pales in comparison to the legacy of the 224 year old document which keeps Presidents and civil servants in their respective places, their egos and power in check.

21. Time the Avenger did that....
The crazy was always present, she was not the character she played at all. I'd guess her personality was one of the reasons that show died young.

4. Northern Exposure was a very phony show anyway
Not even filmed in Alaska and nothing like the people who actually live here. It was stupid, and so is Janine Turner.

5. She just lost my admiration.
From WIki:

As a conservative Republican, in the 2008 election, she campaigned for VP candidate Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and expressed her concern for what she perceives as a decidedly liberal bias in the media as a guest on the Fox News Channel show Huckabee on October 25, 2008 and on the CNN show Larry King Live on October 28, 2008. Turner is a frequent contributor to Republican Party candidates and organizations, donating at least $7,000 over the past decade.<8>

Turner and her daughter Juliette began an organization called "Constituting America" aimed at educating Americans about the U.S. Constitution.<9>

On May 17, 2010 Turner was a paid speaker at an event sponsored by the Americans for Prosperity Foundation honoring Tea Party citizen leaders, where she declared of the Obama administration: “They don’t want our children to know about their rights. They don’t want our children to know about a God!” <10>

8. I guess it depends on how you look at it.
She's all excited because the Constitution was read aloud in Congress. She thinks it's good sign of things to come. Congress conducted business for over two centuries and never saw fit to read the Constitution. They didn't do it during the first session, or during the terms of Jefferson or Madison or Lincoln. Why didn't they do it? Because it would have been superfluous; they took it for granted that anyone elected to such a high office would already be aware of and familiar with the document. Now Americans have elected a bunch of teabaggers to Congress and no one can take anything for granted anymore. We've got to have the Constitution read to the incoming freshmen. We even have a "class" on the Constitution being taught by a Supreme Court Justice. What would Jefferson or Madison have thought of that? Oh yeah, Janine, they're making history, all right.

9. when I see someone with that much makeup caked on, plus
the bleached out hair, overplucked eyebrows, and did I mention piled on makeup?....I see somebody who really hates themselves. Why else would they be trying to hide or change their identity? The pic just screams Freak Show. She looked so "girl next door" normal on Northern Exposure. She looks like molded plastic now...

And her writing truly sucks. Embarrassingly bad. She probably thinks it's really great. Look! An elliteration! And another one! And another one! And a metaphor. And another one. And another one.... and, wait, I know, here's another elliteration! and another one! And another one! :eyes:

11. Ugh! She looks absolutely aweful.
I'm a big fan of Northern Exposure and of her character and acting job on that show, but obviously in real life she's a complete whacko. I'm wondering if she's lost it recently and was still reasonably sane back 20 years ago when doing that show.

What makes this woman relevant? She's done next to nothing since Northern Exposure was canceled fifteen years ago.

23. I happen to have been around the Northern Exposure set back in the day.
Let us just say this is not a surprise. She had a reputation for being, shall we say, a bit loosely put together.
