Where Have We been? Where Are We Going? by James Howard Kunstler. Last paragraph:
"The depravity of our culture, Disney merchandise, cool ranch Doritos, and all, is something that people of the future will marvel at for centuries to come. The purity of our surrender will fascinate them. They will conclude that we looked into the abyss... and decided that we liked what we saw in there."
That's true. In the movies vampires and zombies are sexy and disaster is a super cool thrill-a-minute theme park.
Actually, Kunstler may be a bit more optimistic than me, at least on this particular day and column, because the assumption in those sentences is that there actually will BE people of the future for centuries to come. I think survival beyond the next few years of humanity and maybe all other life forms is an unlikely long shot at best, and those who do survive for awhile won't much like the world they've survived into.
