How Do You Spell Hypocrite, part 2 (Dogskin Report)
(vi email)

Friends,

Last week, an American civilian, Nick Berg, was executed in Iraq. Here are a few facts to put the situation in a somewhat fair and balanced perspective:

Berg willingly entered a war zone. His motives were apparently two-fold. He hoped to set up a company (profit) and simultaneously help rebuild Iraq
(altruism).

Those fighting the US occupation had previously declared all Americans fair game in this war, civilians included. Berg knew this. One can speculate as
to why Iraqi combatants decided to ignore the Geneva Convention. I would guess they threw the rulebook away because, in their eyes, the US had done
the same in their invasion of Iraq.

According to press reports, at least one Iraqi prisoner was beaten to death while in US custody. The major difference between that and the Berg case
was that Berg's death was captured on video and distributed.

The reaction to Berg's killing in the US has been anything but fair and balanced. Indeed, Rush Limbaugh declared on his syndicated radio program that certain
people of Iraq were evil and should be killed. Specifically regarding the video of Nick Berg's beheading, he said:

I thought I saw a couple smiles through the mouth holes in the mask, and at that instant I wanted to call George Bush and say, "Level the place. Turn
it 20,000 degrees and let's start over. We're not dealing with human beings. We're dealing with human debris," and there's no other way to look at
them, and there's no other way to deal with them. They don't deserve to live. They don't deserve sympathy. They don't deserve understanding. They
don't deserve compassion. They don't deserve traditional justice. That's what I was thinking. To hell with rights and all this stuff. I wanted to be in the
charge leading into that room to wipe 'em out.

Of course he is speaking of people fighting against an army that, with faked evidence of WMDs, invaded their country and in the process brought death to as
many as 30,000 Iraqis, including many non-combatants. Not to mention the complete breakdown of a whole society due to a misguided war and occupation.

When Rush Limbaugh did have his chance to "lead the charge" in Vietnam, he opted out. As did George W. Bush. As did Dick Cheney. As did Paul
Wolfowitz. As did Donald Rumsfeld. As did Richard Perle. As did Scooter Libby. As did Karl Rove. As did Jeb Bush. As did Saxby Chambliss. As did Dennis
Hastert. As did Bill Bennett. As did Tom DeLay. As did Trent Lott. As did Newt Gingrich. As did Don Nickles. As did Roy Blunt. As did Marc Racicot. As did
John Bolton. As did Elliot Abrams. As did Andrew Card. As did Sean Hannity. As did Bill O'Reilly. As did Michael Reagan. As did Joe Scarborough. As did
Michael Savage. As did Ann Coulter. As did David Limbaugh.

In fact, if you dive deep into the cesspool of the Bush Administration and their rabid legislative and airwave army, you find only two people (Colin Powell and
Richard Armitage) who have any actual combat experience.

But back to Rush Limbaugh's statement. He calls for extrajudicial killings to avenge the death of one foolish American civilian. He spouts this filth to an
audience of millions. Meanwhile the FCC is busy running after Bono for daring to utter the word "fuck" on TV.

The Bush Administration, not content to simply talk the talk like Limbaugh, enacted just such a policy of extrajudicial killing to avenge the deaths of four
American mercenaries in Fallujah. The death toll was estimated to have been a thousand or more, including a large number of women and children. Nary a
peep of protest from the US media, while many journalists around the world expressed outrage.

Yesterday, two Portland, Oregon DJs were fired for broadcasting an audiotape of the beheading of Nick Berg by Islamic militants while joking about it.

I think all Americans can agree that what the Portland DJs did was highly offensive. They probably did deserve to lose their jobs. The question we should also
be asking is why similar outrage is not expressed about the statements of a Rush Limbaugh and the actions of our own government.

We Americans have basically told the world that -- because of the injustices of 9/11 -- we are allowed to take the law into our own hands. The hell with the UN,
Geneva Convention be damned.

Now, as others emulate our own sorry behavior, we are outraged.

Take a good look. The word is spelled like this: H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-T-E.

Warmest regards,
Top Dog
