1. Let's have a flame war - is the decade 2000-2009 or 2001-2010
2001 to 2010 would put it in line with how the literate count centuries, which are X1 to X00, not X0 to X99.

If so, then Newsweek is a year ahead.

2. Look at your watch
at 8 AM it means that 8 hours HAVE passed. Time is counted in the past tense so when the year 2000 started that meant 2000 years HAD passed.

3. But remember, there was no year 0. So the year 2000 only marked 1999 years.
