If North Port city government were in charge of our penal system, we'd have shoplifters heading to the electric chair.
As it is, city leaders can only seize people's houses, as they've done to Christine Marfut.
In one case, Marfut put a canopy behind her house without getting a $30 permit. Now the fines have risen to $45,000, and the city is forcing the sale of her home. In another case, involving an investment property, Marfut enclosed a lanai and fixed a roof without permits. Those fines have risen to more than $90,000, and the city also has forced the sale of that house.
This is government out of control in the worst way, behaving like some crazed homeowners association.
