Health Care Bill Would Reduce Abortions - Rachel Laser, program director, Third Way
http://www.christianpost.com/article/20090907/health-care-bill-would-reduce-abortion-says-progressive-think-tank/index.html

Over two million women who are in need of access to contraception but are not insured or covered by Medicaid would receive this coverage through the health care bill, highlighted Rachel Laser, culture program director at Third Way.

She also noted how many uninsured women might decide to keep their baby if they had health coverage that would ease the cost of pregnancy and early childhood.

Fifty-seven percent of abortions, Laser pointed out, are preformed on women who live at or below 200 percent of the poverty line.

“Prevention and support are keys to reducing abortions,” wrote Laser in a column posted in The Huffington Post. “Thus, the overall effect of this reform package, with increased prevention and support services, will likely be to reduce abortions.”

{The Health Care Reform bill} “breaks no new ground.” Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs), and the tax exemption for employer-provided health insurance are among some of the existing government subsidies that help people buy health care services – 87 percent of which offer abortion as covered services.

1. The horrible fact is that a certain percentage of abortions are chosen
out of economic concerns. That is very sad for the women who have them. The pressure on poor women to abort a baby if they can't afford the medical care pre- and post-natal will be alleviated by this reform. Catholics and others who oppose abortion should get solidly behind this effort regardless of whether it includes any new abortion restrictions. This bill will help all poor families.

It is ridiculous for Catholic priests who never marry and do not know the sacrifices that women make to bear children to oppose giving all mothers access to health care insurance -- to medical care -- because they are not getting everything they want. This bill will cut the number of abortions in this country more than any other measure taken thus far.

2. For some reason people who are so against abortion are unwilling to provide poor young women
with the means to birth control which would prevent so many abortions. I guess it's just too practical an approach.

The botton line here is, i'm afraid, the mixing of religion and politics. a principle upon which this country was founded is no longer being followed. thus, much suffering, .....though many self-righteous are contented.

3. Which just proves, yet again,, that the forced birthers are NOT about
saving lives..but about controlling women.

4. There was someone here who was raising hell about the HCRbills - she was against it
bacause it wouldn't pay for abortions. Surprised she didn't jump on this post (favorably). Maybe they were more concerned about criticising HCR and the abortion payment issue was a convenient rock to throw.

I mean if women can obtain birth control I know they would consider that preferable to terminating a pregnancy.
