Obama-haters are perverting Christianity - Tony Norman Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Edited on Fri Nov-20-09 11:05 AM by RamboLiberal
By Tony Norman, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Forty-six years ago this weekend, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated as he rode in his motorcade in Dallas.

-----

Even the most hard-core, gun-toting Protestant of the most militant backwoods church wouldn't have nursed a big enough grudge against the only Catholic president of the United States to kill him.

The fervent anti-Communism and right-wing paranoia of the early 1960s had yet to produce the kind of "Christians" who could pray for the president's death and call it a religious duty with a straight face.

But after four decades of culture wars, mounting frustration with pluralism and a realization that a constitutional theocracy isn't likely in America, some "believers" are allowing their inner Satan to call the shots.

Tony Norman goes on to talk about the preachers asking for Obama's death from the pulpit and the bumper sticker/t-shirts with "Pray for Obama Psalm 109:8"

1. "Christianity" might have more credibility in this arena if they dump the Old Testament.
Because otherwise, you own it.

6. That is what Christ told them to do
I could never understand what part of "new covenant" they couldn't understand.

13. actually, Jesus was supposed to do that. The old testament is
'closed' because Jesus fulfills the covenants. Or so they tell me.

The Prince of Peace actively work for anything but peace. I find it further amazing that certain "Christians" would (a) use Biblical passages to advocate harm (b) to another Christian, especially one as devout as President Obama. I find it further amazing that the principal Christian message of "love thy neighbor" is, unfortunately, contingent on a whole bunch of qualifiers, primarily skin color. And let's not lie--another no-no, false witness, you know--that's ultimately what all the hate and bad vibes directed at President Obama is all about: his skin color. Oh, and that he wants to bring competent, capable, AFFORDABLE and AVAILABLE healthcare to everyone. Minister to the sick, anyone?

10. "Neighbor" in the Bible means fellow Israelite.
Edited on Fri Nov-20-09 03:32 PM by burning rain
It doesn't mean "any human being" or "any human being near you." "Love thy neighbor" in the system of the Bible means, love thy fellow Israelite, and the injunction of tthe Decalogue "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor" merely prohibits bearing false witness against a fellow Israelite. Honestly, it appears well-meaning liberal Christians simply decide that since they're nice people with nice preferences, the Bible must be a nice book with nice preferences; never mind what it actually says.

8. Considering that the Christ myth is just a perversion of Bronze-aged pagan myths
is anyone surprised that perverting myths comes with the territory?

Edited on Fri Nov-20-09 05:59 PM by winyanstaz
thank you for pointing that out.
"The greatest story ever told"...is a whole lot older than the bible..and found in many parts of the older religions too.
All the people did that wrote the bible was steal a lot of stuff from the pagans and changed the names and made it "christian" and that includes the Christmas/Yule tree.
