Senate body seeks details of foreigners

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Interior sought details of foreigners living in the federal capital and other parts of the country from the Interior Ministry here on Monday.
The committee meeting, chaired by Senator Muhammad Talha Mehmood, discussed in detail the issue of foreign diplomats, their offices and residences here.The secretary interior, giving a break-up of residences in use of foreigners here, said 1,405 foreigners were living in 907 houses. He said 39 Americans were living in 28 houses, 290 nationals of EU countries in 235 houses, 247 Chinese nationals in 235 houses and 829 nationals of other countries were living in 539 houses. The committee was told that 284 houses were in possession of 414 Americans other than diplomats.
The Islamabad inspector general of police (IGP) and the chief commissioner told the meeting that a private US security firm (DynCorp) was working in collaboration with a local private security agency, Inter-Risk, adding that their offices were located here.
The IGP said in four incidents so far, foreign diplomats were arrested by the police for moving with weapons, but were released later under the law that diplomats were exempted from the local law.
The committee directed the Foreign Office to take up the issue of diplomats breaking the law with foreign embassies and send letters to them in this regard. The committee said it was in its knowledge that 500 high utility multipurpose vehicles had been imported in the country by the foreigners and directed the Interior Ministry to give details of it. The committee also sought details of security equipment being imported from China.
